Navy Question in Today's Daily Mail

Posts: 104 (26-Jun-2009 14:28:02) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Just left the pub after scanning the Daily Mail, in the Question and Answer section, which is quite entertaining sometimes with readers asking wierd questions, I found this question posted, for answering later in the week:- "Why is the Royal Navy advertising for piliots ? Do they have any Aeroplanes?" Made my heart sink to read that. The Navy is so crap at publicity, the general population have no idea what they do, or even why we need them in the first place ( rather than a few fishery protection patrol boats). we all could answer this question well, but thats not my point, which is that I find it very sad that the Navy's "Currency" with Joe public has sunk so low that questions like this even have to be asked! Also in the same paper - did you know the MOD now has more civil servants than Solders ! ( Army to shink to smallest size since the Crimea) Ashley

If, for some reason, the RAF had ships, the public would probably assume that they were operated by the RN.

( Army to shink to smallest size since the Crimea)" Nations' defence establishments have shown falling numbers of warriors and rising numbers of enablers for many years - BEF 1918 had 60 divisions. "Civil servants" can cover some jobs you wouldn't normally picture as paper shuffling clockwatchers. For instance the civ pop on training exercises are often MOD civil servants, mostly ex Gurkha soldiers. They do essentially what Gurkha Demonstration Companies do at Sandhurst, Brecon & Warminster but they are in the books as civil servants. Likewise much routine security that was once a chore for bored swaddies / matelots / airmen is now covered by "civil servants". Quite a few training instructors are also civil servants where once they were (at least in name) soldiers. The downside to less boring routine stuff is a higher proportion of "excitement".

By coincidence I was watching an old episode of Yes Minister the other day and some similar comment was made, although I think the reference was to the RN rather than the army. Incidentally a couple of the Yes Prime Minister episodes were heavily defence related. Anyone remember those?
