In his 1996 book, High Seas, a Passage Through an Uncharted World, former deputy CNO Owens proposed that the LPD-17 and the DDG come together in one powerful
vessel. This ship, called the LSS or Littoral Supremacy Ship would have a troop lift of 500, tiltrotors for air assualt, docking well with LCATs for
amphibious landing from a well deck and carry Harrier STOVL fighters along perhaps with USMC attack helos. Gunfire support would also be provided and the
forecastle would carry 500 missiles in a VLS farm as part of the DDG-51 Aegies suite. Given this proposal, how would you evaluate it's usefulness and what
changes would you make in the design.
I for one favour operation of a couple MH-53Ks and a tiltrotor escort for the transport tiltrotors as a gunship version of the civil BA609 in the testing stage now.
