The preliminary figures also includes planned quantities for the United Kingdom of 2 aircraft in fiscal year 2009, 4 aircraft in fiscal year 2010, 9 aircraft in fiscal year 2011, 9 aircraft in fiscal year 2012, and 10 aircraft in fiscal year 2013."

That's if those orders stay as planned. 2 being tested in 2010 after delivery in 2009. 4 starting to train pilots in 2011, First 9 plane squadron forming up in 2012, after delivery in 2011 Second 9 plane squadrion forming in 2013, Third 9 plane squadron 2014, with 1 extra bought as a possible attrition It will be interesting to see what follows in the next year. If its another 10 then fine. If its less then we can be a little depressed, because it will definitely mean that 800/801 will remain as 1 (if larger) squadron. In a perfect world we should really be looking either at 4 x 12 plane squadrons, or forming up a 5th 9 plane squadron - but I guess we'll be relying on allies to provide top up squadrons for some time to come. I guess it looks like we might get around 50 in a first batch, and probably no more till the early 2020s, when we'll probably we looking at more advanced blocks. I am actually heartened and suprised at the pace and timing of the deliverys. But I supose the GR are gettting through their hours pretty fast. It will be interesting to see what capabilities these early batches will have. Might we see the F35 being delivered before and with more capabilities than tranche 3?

Sir Humphrey: Minister, Britain has had the same foreign policy objective for at least the last 500 years: to create a disunited Europe. In that cause we have fought with the Dutch against the Spanish, with the Germans against the French, with the French and Italians against the Germans, and with the French against the Germans and Italians. Divide and rule, you see. Why should we change now when it's worked so well?

Here in Australia, this isn't even being talked about in the public arena such that many fear 'our' RAAF F-35's will be ours in name only as U.S personnel will be needed to maintain them (like Boeing does with our current aircraft). Also well end up with downgraded 'partner versions' as befits a sycophantic U.S client state in a U.S dominion. One has to admire India in its imaginative pursuit of the Mig-29K for its carrier(s). Some in Australia are following suite where we are acquiring the Spanish BPE carriers and modifying them for STOBAR operations and Mig-29Ks'. Also in Tamania the twin hull catamarans have been proposed as a mini carrier version, for STOBAR /Ski jump operations. At 112m long they could fit for Mig-29K's at light to moderate loads- just!. Many here just don't think the F-35 will do (and when has it ever been different for the 'loudhailers'), meanwhile our RAN declines steadily. Good wishes to the people of Britain and the RN, you've got wellwishers here in Australia.

Apparently yes, 1-2 years ago it was agreed that no US personnel would be needed if that is what the UK wishes. I think a similar deal was reached with Australia. I understand that it was recently admitted that this was exactly what ocurred with the F/A18s... so maybe you'll be able to get a fix.

What on Earth are you on about? -Australia has no interest in operating fixed wing aircraft off of the Canberra class. They are amphibious ships designed to land and support a combined arms battle group. We actually need that capability. -Turning a Juan Carlos I into a STOBAR carrier would be a fantastically bad idea. To add an angled flight deck would require a monumental effort, and would result in a sub standard carrier with sod-all amphibious capability. -Wow, MiG-29 vs F-35, do you honestly not appreciate that F-35 is a full generation more advanced than the MiG? -I will eat every hat I own if Australia and the UK don't end up with access to the source codes for the F-35. -Which Australian jets do we rely upon the US for service? Really, I'm waiting to hear it, and please back it up with something more solid than "my mate Dave told me".

Poor Aussies had to set their top geeks on breaking the code. Apparently the radars and systems on the Bugs were set to pick up Soviet types, but not NATO types thereby electonically influencing Aussie foreign policy. Agree with you on the MIG bit though. I mean come on. The US might do a few things we might not like, but do you really want to be owing to Putin and his henchmen? A country that will turn off your energy, run nuclear bombers at you, and maybe even poison you while you're trying to grab some sushi?

Surely such things have changed, given that there are possible adversaries of the US operating NATO aircraft- for instance, Iran and Venezuela- while there are some NATO countries with Soviet-built aircraft (Eastern Europe). Also, Australia's most likely regional adversary operates F-16s, F-5s and A-4s. You can no longer decide whether an aeroplane is friend or foe based on where it was made.
