I know that the US was seriously considering sn invasion during WWII. How would it have worked out?

For a significant number of the US troops? Quite badly regardless of the overall success of the invasion. For the Japanese troops? Much worse. Not a heck of a
lot of good for quite a few of the civilians, either.
The invasion would probably succeed, although if Chiang's forces were significantly involved, he'd probably p*ss off the locals enough to ensure that Taiwan is not independent of mainland China. |

That won't happen as Japan controlled the entire Chinese coast. This would be strictly an American operation.

Just to compare land areas of the larger island campaigns, real or planned:
Taiwan is 35,975 km2. Okinawa is 1,500 km2. Philippines - 299,681, inc. Luzon 104,688, Leyte 7,213. so it would have taken quite a large force. Formosa had quite a few Japanese colonists and was technically part of Japan at the time, which would perhaps have inspired more resistance. I think there was a large garrison there in case of US attack. A Taiwanese friend of mine has also surprised me by telling me older Taiwanese actually retain positive attitudes towards the Japanese as they had brought development to a previously underdeveloped society. So US forces may have found less civilian co-operation than they planned for. |

Formosa contributed entire army divisions to the Japanese war effort. The 48th Infantry Division, used to invade the Philippines, was formed in Formosa during 1940. |

48th Division was formed from Japanese soldiers and most of its units were created in Japan (only two infantry regiments were "formozan", but they
were also staffed with Japanese recruits).
Only from 1943 (or 1944) some locals were drafted and some formed into "Takasago" raiding companies - BTW, the only combat units in IJA, staffed mostly by non-Japanese. As for majority of the population, I suppose, that it would be formed into local defence units and will desert even in lager quantities, than Okinawans.

Two out of three total. That makes it a Formosan infantry division. However I don't doubt that all the high ranking officers were Japanese. |

Two out of 8 (3 infantry, 1 artillery, 1 recon, 1 engineer, 1 medical, 1 transport).
And you seem to not notice the fact, that not only "high ranking officers", but ALL the soldiers as well were Japanese. There were NO Formozan soldiers in IJA until 1943 at least. |
