Weren't the 2250s the AM Sumners class? Steinaker is a Gearing (2400).
Robustly built ships, amazing that one is still going strong more than sixty years after she was launched. |

Right or wrong we called everything that had single 5"/38's such as the Fletcher Class 2100's. The next class of ships all mounted twin 5"/38's and we called all of them 2200's or 2250's your choice. That being said even in my day the ships were hard to tell apart and the several DD's that I served on were all Gearings which we called 2250's. The Fletchers were 2100's and had a top speed of about 36 to 38 Kts but their fuel capacity was deemed a little short for work in the pacific. The next class was the Allen M Sumners class which were built around the Fletcher machinery but had 2 rudders where Fletcher had one. The hull of the
Fletcher and the Sumner was the same size.
The Gearing Class was an Allen M Sumners Class with about 14 more feet for more fuel oil and speed of about 32 to 34 Kts. The Gearing Class was a 2250 ton DD and the added 14 feet made the Gearing and Sumners almost identical and you really had to go by hull numbers to tell them apart. The 14 ft allowed the Gearing to carry some 160 tons more of fuel oil and did not have the bow heavy syndrome that the Sumners had because of some relocated machinery. (What I don't know.) No Gearing saw WWII action I don't think as the first was launched in 1945 I believe?

By reputation both the six gun ships were wet forward. The FRAM Is lost Mount 52 (among many other things) and were a bit more balanced in this regard. The
engineering plants of all three (Fletcher/Summner/Gearing) were basically identical, except the latter two classes had two EDGs. Some of the Gearings had a
REALLY big fire pump called Big Bertha, a lessons-learned installation after all that 'alongside carrier fire fighting' experience. Allegedly it could
lift firemain relief valves all over the ship all by itself.
Arguably the best engineering plants ever put into steam destroyers. Reserve FRAM Is were hanging tough into the late '70s if not beyond. |

yea i remember refueling the 2100 S every Three days or so at sea it was fun tho especially in heavy seas I was oil king then, got a few tid bits to tell but
dat is another story Gee Gene those pics were awesome almost made me wanna cut in an udder burner or give # 5 or 6 a bottom blow or ask permission to blow
tubes, love to piss off the deck apes!! pay back is a SOB!!!!!
