A Tone Class Cruiser...I thought there was not meant to be any pics of the Tone class anywhere.

The only know pictures are two or three taken by USN gun camera's during the battle that sank Tone. This appears to be one of them.

It appears that it was taken at Kure in 1937, and is Mogami just beginning her reconstruction to CA, with Hiei in the background being re-activated (the other
Kongos had had their 14" guns elevation increased by lowering their barbette machinery from 1924-1931, but Hiei had not until this
re-activation/modernization. This is why her forward turrets are removed).

Hello,
The image of ASHIGARA is from the cruiser's 1937 visit to Great Britain.
And quite a number of photos of the TONE-class cruisers exist, but nowhere near as many as the other IJN heavy cruisers. That was due to secrecy and the fact that they were the last such units constructed before the war. |
