Read in the newspaper article about the re-creation of the Fourth Fleet to be based at Mayport Florida, and would cover Central and South American operations,
as well as anti-drug and anti-terroism operations. Any idea on surface or sub-surface combatants that would be assigned to the organization of the re-created
4th?

Sounds like they are basically establishing numbered fleets to coincide with most of the regional combatant commands. Fifth Fleet is basically identical to
NAVCENT (naval component of Central Command), for example, and it sounds like Fourth Fleet will be NAVSOUTH (naval component of Southern Command). It's
just an adminsitrative change to give them a bit more political and budget authority.
Like all the numbered fleets, Fourth Fleet would have assets assigned as and when needed. Usually I expect this would be a mixed bag of surface ships and aircraft, mainly on counternarcotics duties, plus the special ops folks doing riverine training, etc. For big exercises like UNITAS (which just kicked off), it could have anything up to a carrier strike group. |

I doubt Mayport is going to get any more ships, I know their is something like 7 options on the table but the cheapest route is to do nothing.

The Fourth fleet is being reactivated for budgetary and organizational reasons.

Probably get a bunch of castrated OHP class FF(no G) oversized patrol boats... which is all they really need for "anti-drug and anti-terrorism
operations".
They can carry 2 Seahawks, and I'm sure they can be fitted with a couple of RHIBs for boarding operations. The 76mm gun, and the Phalanx would do fine to handle anyone who gets argumentative. |

As of October 2007, units based in and around Mayport that may be included into the Fourth Fleet's organization. Nothing too special to note, other than
that there is a considerable number of the Navy's remaining Oliver Hazard Perry class FFGs in comission stationed here. The newspaper article did state
that no additional units would be sent to Mayport for the fleet's re-creation.

Any ship that happens to be in that area will be part of 4th fleet, none of the Mayport ships will be a permanent part of that fleet.
