Cheers Jock
I find it difficult to fathom why the USN removed Harpoon from the Flight IIAs? The John Paul Jones seems to have made use of the space amidship, I don't know why the later units don't have them. Also, why don't you create a single Pics thread on here Jock? It'd consolidate the clutter in the forum topics, but also allow members to find your pic updates easily which you could update whenever an interesting photo came up. I'm sure the admin could even 'stickify' it! Regds

Hi Shaun, I agree with you, I used to do that and I think I'll go back to that. Its just that sometimes a fair period went by without additions previously and recently thankfully there has been a fair few. I reckoned today the RN might have been arriving on the Tay with 2 extra tugs up from the Forth, often a sign the Navy is arriving with something larger than the usual trade. It was large at 111,928 gt, but not the addition I hoped for. Cheers Jock |

shaun wrote:The space amidships is used, but it's used for underway relpenishment kingposts, not Harpoon. The Harpoons are aft, behind the Phalanx and illuminators. Because the Flight IIAs have a raised deck aft, putting Harpoon in the same location would block the aft firing arcs for the CIWS. Unfortunately, moving the Harpooon to that midships gap would seriously complicate UNREP, because it would eliminate a lot of the the clear deck space next to the kingposts. I've seen a reconsitution plan to restore Harpoon to the Flight IIA Burkes, and it involves building up a raised deck amidships. I believe that would still cause major UNREP impacts and possibly even some radar propagation issues with the aft SPY arrays, depending on how far out it projected.

Added this 1982 pic of HMS Tiger seeing out her latter days http://maritimegallery.fotopic.net/p51705679.html
Not sure exactly when in '82 the shot was taken, but it goes a long way I suspect to showing why she wasn't brought back for the Falklands |

Yarmouth and a few other were on the rusty side when they got back, if that image is of HMS Yarmouth returning from the Falklands. What I was referring to was
the basically missing hanger doors and what looks like parts stipped off amidships
