1927 film of WW1
To commemorate the upcoming centenary of two WW1 naval
battles, the British Film Institute has restored the 1927 silent film ‘The
Battles of Coronel and Falkland Islands’, with a new score played by the band
of the Royal Marines.
Made with full Admiralty co-operation, the film combines plenty
of footage shot at sea (around Malta), preparations on the Falklands (starring
St Mary’s in the Scilly Islands) and at Portsmouth, with some studio reconstructions. It is very
fair in its depiction of both sides, and while it inevitably ignores the early decisions
made by Churchill & Fisher that sent Kit Cradock into battle with an inadequate force, it does accurately present
the stages of both battles.
The ‘Cast List’ – (only the warships are credited!) includes
HMS Barham & Malaya playing HMS Invincible & Inflexible, and the
cruisers HMS Cardiff, Concord, Conquest, Coventry & Ceres playing
respectively HMS Good Hope, Monmouth, Glasgow, SMS Scharnhorst & Gneisenau.
I saw it yesterday at the BFI Southbank, and recommend it to
anyone who can get there before it closes on Nov 6th. (details at http://explore.bfi.org.uk/543fcd991039a).
Well worth seeing for the shots of these old warships at
sea, and glimpses of on-board life.
