In response to the thoughts of the coming conflict, in which USA's most likely enemies, Germany, Italy, and Japan all have decent submarine fleets, it is
decided to build a class of corvettes intended for short to medium range escort around the U.S. coast and local ports. A class of forty such ships will be
constructed, depending on the design chosen.
The main requirements are the ships be armed with at least 1x4"/50 calibre gun firing a 33 lb shell, recycled from flush decked destroyers either scrapped or converted into other duties. In addition, a small AA suite of at least 2x1.1/75 calibre guns firing a 0.9 lb shell must be embarked, as well at least 20, but preferrably 40, Depth Charges.
Speed should be at least 20 knots, with a minium range of 1,500 nm at 14 knots. Diesel propulsion is preferred. Protection - the 4" gun should have splinter protection, along with the deck, to guard against strafing aircraft and surfaced battles against submarines. Displacement should be no greater than 1,000 tons standard.
The best design incorporating the minimum requirements, if not better, with the best seakeeping, stability, and cost would be declared the winner.
