That being said...
These are two ships I've been bashing together over the last few days (since the U.S.S. Chuck Norris thread got going) while I was breaking from studying. The smaller one is a light patrol frigate meant for working the in the Gulf of Texas (Mexico). Her low freeboard would prevent operations in heavier seas, but average wave height in the Gulf is about 2m, so I figure that she can handle it. She's a jack of all trades, having 8 anti-ship missiles in the two box mounts immediately forward of the hanger, a light chopper capable of ASW work & 2 ASW torp mounts, and a light SAM suite (Sea Sparrows) and a CIWS. At only 300' she's cramped and too small for blue water work, but cheap enough to field a couple of squadrons for coastal work.
Next is a blue water fleet frigate. She's very heavily armed- mounting a pair of 5" automatic guns, a pair of heavy SAM missile mounts, 12 Harpoon-type missiles in twin box mounts alongside the superstructure, two ASW torpedo mounts aft and a pair of CIWS. She's not intended to work in an ASW capacity, so no chopper. Her primary intended duties are as a commerce raider or part of a cruiser/destroyer group. She's 350' long and I'd hope she would be competitive with the OTL US Navy's Knox. Though she's much smaller, her willingness to dispose of the helicopter and put her missiles where they might scorch some paint would make her a much more powerful ship, pound per pound, without sacrificing any interior space.
She is probably over-armed. Should I remove the aft SAM launcher to be a bit more realistic?
