What machinery or fittings would have had canvas coverings, heavily greased it appears, in US Treaty cruisers's engine spaces?

What machinery or fittings would have had canvas coverings, heavily greased it appears, in US Treaty cruisers's engine spaces? TIA |

The first things that came to my mind were expansion joints and bellows fittings.
The same components would later employ higher-tech rubberized parts, often reinforced with wire inside the rubber. |

Do keep in mind that mine were guesses. I've spent a fair amount of time in the engine rooms of a US cruiser, but it was built post-WWII. I'm getting old, but I'm not THAT old ;-) There are some other possibilities. There could have been some component within it that needed to be guarded from foreign material intrusion. In that case, the grease could have been water-proofing. Do you have a link to a picture? |

And thanks once more. Sorry, no pic. Apparently the material (heavy cloth/canvas) appears to have been pretty well impregnated with grease, so your suggestion seems a reasonable one. |
