Had the US not stepped in to help the Israelis, would they have used nukes? And if they had, what would have been the consequences?

My opinion? If the Israelis thought their immediate national survival was at stake, yes, but not before. Had they used them, chances are the long term
survival of Israel (vs Israelis) are probably slim.

Nuking your neighbours, when they're just a few hundred km away, or even closer (it's 106 km between Amman and Tel Aviv, for example) makes nuclear
fall out a nasty reality.

The US was aware that Israel was seriously considering deploying nukes( they were in fact on the move) to stave off conventional defeat and told the Russians
who deployed nukes to Egypt to establish a balance of terror and use ceased to be a possiblity at that time. It all became irrelevant when the Israelis got the
upper hand in the Sinai and the Arabs dicovered they had a weapon even more powerful than Nukes ie Oil and the ability to withhold which they did and jack up
the price which they also did (quintupling it) . I am the only person living who remembers the panic that caused

Had Damascus and Cairo been nuked, would the Russians have responded or would the threat of relation from the US stopped them?

The American objective was that no nukes should be used. They counted on Israel not use them first if there was a credible risk of retaliation and history
shows they were correct

That was a situation where the Soviets were even more scared than during the Cuban Missile Crisis. They never imagined the Egyptians would fare so well
during the 1st week. Luckily for them the Egyptians stopped and dug in after securing the Suez Canal. Israel was embarrassed, but they never felt truly
threated on the Sinai Front.
When the Egyptian 3rd Army was cut off and isolated in week 3, Kosygin was volunteering that Soviet Airborne Divisions be dropped in immediately as Peace keepers. The US answered his proposal with a DEFCON Alert. Few people ever realized how tense the situation really was. Damascus was tagged for the first nuke, and Zahal had a Skyhawk ready if the situation worsened. Nobody knows how many Nukes Israel had then, but nobody doubted they would use them if things went bad. The Soviets wanted to stir up trouble in the Middle East, but they never imagined how things could spin out of control. B. |

Why should they?
The US aid was not critical for the immediate military crisis - all it did was to allow for more liberate usage of ammunition stocks after the crisis was already under control. It helped a lot in rebuilding public conficence and as a statement to counterbalance the Russian aid, though. Nothing of this has an impact on the decision (or not) to go nuclear. |
