An amusing tale. Shows how complex a modern warship really is that even a relatively simple thing can create major headaches:

How big is one of these fridges?

this is a big walk in cold storage room. Meat rooms run at -18C so losing that would spoil the contents within a day or so.

This wasn't a problem her engineering staff could fix?

Probably some PFI nonsense, meaning that only some engineer back in blighty is allowed to touch the thing!!! Or worse the spares situation in the RN
doesn't include a compressor for the food fridge!

Why not repair in Gibraltar? | ||

This would have caused less publicity, at least.

Tony D wrote: This is more discouraging than amusing? Do cruise ships ever return to port for such a trifling matter? It is inexcusable that an aircraft carrier would return to port, wasting two days fuel (or will it be 4 days), for a matter that should have either been corrected before leaving port, or even while underway? This sort of slack management wouldn't be tolerated in the private sector. Would a cruise line cancel a sailing because of a single defective refrigeration unit? |

Wot CVA02 said. This episode is unlikely to have impressed the kind of people Orion 08 was supposed to impress.

Or it could be that things go wrong, especially on something that is 26 years old and past her prime. Defects happen, you'd be surprised how often warships
in general need to go alongside to fix things.

The Freezer thing is rather mundane. Things like this happen. Sure wouldn't want to be on board if the meat goes bad. If it was bad you would have to throw
it overboard. There would be some very fat and happy sharks out there.
