even though the US 16"/50- fires a much heavier shell- the power in both guns in sidearmour penetration seem to be really similar, its only for deck
armour penetration that the 16/50 is visibly superior. the 15" seems to have a longer range aswell.

I suspect so. I believe it's even mentioned in the Nippon Kaigun site and on navweaps.

Yeah the Italians built some excellent ships. But you can build the most excellent ships in the world, and still not win if you have poor people manning them
or leading them. And timid leadership was a big factor on the part of the Italians.

presuming you can solve all of the problems nessasary to build and operate a heavy shell, high velocity gun, then the Italian gun is an excellent choice if you
think WWII BB fights will be fought at 15,000-25,000 yards. If you think BB fights will be solved at 30,000+ yrds range - the USN solution will be superior, at
least in its effect after the shell hits the target.

So, the Italian gun will probably be good for night-time engagements, while the USN would be good for daytime engagements, seeing as there is a distance
difference between the two?

I think you will find competing opinion in navies of the time, and in gunzels apreciation today about exactly what was an effective daylight range for WWII
battleships, with opinions ecomosasing both those range bands quoted.

Ahoj!
I've read on the other board that firing the 2700lbs shell, the barrel life of the USN weapons was some 80 shots. True? Borys |

see note 9. For the 16"/45 at 2300 fps (And presumably the 16"/50 firing special charges to get 2300 fps) barrel life was 395 ESR. http://navweaps.com/Weapons/WNUS_16-45_mk6.htmsee note 4. |

Yes, I know. But I'm fairly sure I read - on the battleships or warship designs board - that these figures are for the 1900 lbs (thereabouts) HE shell. Not the 2700 lbs APC. The note 9 mentions HC only, not APC. Borys |
