On the MOD News website there is a picture of Gloucester when she has finished her refit at rosyth and i noticed her radar covers are missing for the sea dart
radar. I've never seen this before it's not the best picture but you can clearly see the 2 big grey domes aren't there. Is there a reason for them
missing? Will she go to sea like this? Has anyone noticed this on any other Type 42's? sorry for so many questions!

IIRC it is not uncommon - other T42 have gone for initial post-refit tests without the domes fitted. I think it is something about making it easier to make
modifications. Happy to be corrected of course as to reasons etc (which was just speculation) but we've had similar pictures on this board over the past
few years and I think that was the answer provided...

I've also read that the domes are left off post refit until after the radars are calibrated.

Also means that it's easier to use them as microwaves!

The reason that the weapons Radar type 909 domes are off is to enable weapons alignment checks during post refit trials. Various optical equipment are used
during this process.

Radomes removed during refit for calibration and repair of the mount. I guess they can withstand some exposure to elements but long term are better off under the cover. Interestingly the 911 radars on the seawolf frigates never had a radome. http://www.savetheroyalnavy.org/ |

It's not really surprising that 911 trackers never had a dome - they included an optical tracker!

So that's which T42 I've been seeing when crossing the bridge.
As others have said it is pretty common to see them sans covers after a refit. |
