Posts: 3714 ( 2-Dec-2007 15:46:46) Straw Boss Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Just a quick question for Age of Sail enthusiasts: What was the color scheme of the ships of the line of the various fleets (i.e. color of the hull, the stripes over the gun ports, the lower masts and the decks)? The Americans are easy: black hull, white gunport stripe, yellow lower masts and natural decks. Can anyone tell me the schemes for: Britain France Spain Russia The Netherlands Any other fleets of significance.

Posts: 32 ( 2-Dec-2007 16:59:08) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Ragusan galleon(probably their ships of the line in 16th century, as these were the biggest and most armed) The hull should be somewhere between green and brown, the mast is darkbrown, sails are white without any marks. Later, they were also appyling black as the hull colour, whith black(sometimes black, sometimes natural, or a mix of both) mast and white sails again. Don't know about the decks, but the model of a ship I built(it was a Yuslavian made kit, superb fun, the model is now in one of the restaurants in Vienna, don't ask me how) when I was a kid had natural decks. No information on gun stripes. Usually, they were hoisting two flags, white neutral with Libertas on it and other showing Saint Blasius, the protector of Ragusa. The third, containing the crest of the Dubrovnik, was hoisted in the presence of high city officials. The guns were above and lower of the main deck. Posts: 145 ( 2-Dec-2007 17:35:46) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The UK was the captain's choice, but the usual was the "Nelson chequer"- Black hull, yellow gunport stripe, black gunports, natural decks and spars, yellow "gingerbread-work" (details). For an example, take a look at HMS Victory. However, the flags on the Victory (White Ensign at stern, St. George's cross with one ball at mainmast) are historically inaccurate, and are the modern flags of a Vice-Admiral's flagship- which she is. As Nelson's flagship at Trafalgar, she AFAIK flew a White Ensign at the stern and at the foremast.

Colour scheme is a pretty good mimic of the original of both karaka and galleon. They didn't have disel engines, though Republic of Ragusa - Non bene pro toto libertas venditur auro

On the main topic, there were no really standard national patterns, or any standard pattern at all till the Nelson checkerboard caught on. Captains painted their ships as they wished, within very broad guidelines (mainly how much money the Admiralty provided), and general custom.
