I was just wondering what are the common liberty ports used by CVNs en route to the Persian Gulf.
Thanks in advance, Mike (former USN AO-1 and trusty, crusty Shellback) |

Well, that's fine for East coast based CVNs... what about the West coast ones?
Honolulu, Hawaii (rarely); Perth & Sydney, Australia; Guam; Singapore?; any others? |

On the way to and from Persian, you missed quite a few. Palma de Majorca (come on, who can forget the Daqueri Palace.) Naples Italy , Marmaris Turkey,
Cartegena Spain. As well as other smaller ports.

I know the Nimitz went to a port in India..named Chennai, India. Carriers don't get that much libert anymore if they are in the 5th fleet...
Check this link for USN CV ports of calls going back several years. Warning>>> The site is not 100% accurate..About 85%. http://www.gonavy.jp/CVLocation.html |

How often did USN CVs call into Hong Kong prior to 1997? IIRC, Saigon/HCMC is being considered as a possible liberty port.

Common liberty ports
I made 2 such Med - Indian Ocean cruises. Athens, Greece (where I joined the ship, 1 month after the cruise started) Sri Lanka (Don't drink the water. I found out the hard way!) Mombassa, Kenya (Beautiful beach resorts for very low cost. Beer and other drinks cost about a nickle a bottle.) Naples, Italy. (The tour of Mount Vesuvius and Pompeii were good. And spaghettti really does taste better in Italy.) Monaco (Sunshine and beautiful women. Southern France is nice.) Malaga, Spain. (Lower cost version of Southern France. And you get to see a bull fight.) Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. (Spring break! )
St. Thomas, Virgin Islands. (Blue water and sand, but not much else.) Norfolk, Virginia (Home port) Portsmouth, Virginia (1 month of drydock time after each deployment) U.S.S. America (CV-66) January 1983 - June 1985. Trusty shellback. Blue nose also (on different ship). |
