Damn well said Baron. Unfortunately we have more than our FAIR share of brain dead morons on this board NoOnefamous, F106, Larce and Mahansen2 etc. I am less critical of the Non US folks here than our own gibbering idiots because as you said they have a reason not to understand the nuances of US politics. What they do have in common is a pathological hatred of POTUS Trump because they fear he means what he has said. Guess what? They are right to be running scared sh!tless and I am enjoying greatly.
ISA, you "Aint" seen "Nothin" Yet. Mullets, just plain mullets.
Baron wrote:larce, I don't think you understand why Trump beat Clinton. He won because he promised to either make needed changes in internal body politic or else blow this place up. That's why he is the president. If it comes to blowing the place up and interested bystanders like the EU or Japan are injured, then too bad for them. They will have to make difficult decisions.
As far as Trump's effect on allies both weak and strong, reliable and unreliable, for them, the Trump voters, its not germane or at least less germane. Your Trump voter is well past that concern now. More important to them than foreign policy is to stop the downward death spiral, (the endless lowering of standards, the piling up of debt, the dictatorship of the elites, the concentration of wealth) that the Trump voter feels is the most important thing involved.
One of the many big problems with outsourcing your defense to the United States is the realization that the US has different interests than the EU and even the UK so when you say the EU cannot have its security based on trusting something as unreliable and incompetent as the American people I'd agree with you. I would note though that one is left to wonder who is more incompetent, the Americans or the people who did the outsourcing in the first place.
Personally I don't think Russia is much of a threat to anyone outside the old Russian Empire and I care about as much for Estonia's or Kazakhstan's future as I care about putting a man on Mars...in other words not at all. This is not 1939. This is not 1946. Its not even 1991. The Soviet Union does not exist anymore and Russia is not a reborn Soviet Union, not even close. Times change and relationships need to change too or risk becoming obsolete. NATO seems important to you in the EU. It no longer seems of much importance to me. I can't detect a mission for NATO that needs US participation to be fulfilled.
I'm not embarrassed by Trump anymore than I was embarrassed by Obama, Bush1, Bush2 or Clinton. All of them are embarrassing alike. The only thing I wanted out of Trump was a couple of decent picks to the Supreme Court. In Gorsuch he has provided the first one. When Ruth Ginsburg dies, soon I hope, he will deliver the 2nd one...if he makes it that far and he's not backstabbed by McConnell.
I realize that most of this too "inside baseball" to mean much to folks overseas but it needed to be said.
Finally, I have long agreed with what Icel said above, you can't possibly think Obama had anyone's back other than his own.

They may or may not let us base there but it doesn't much matter. I think we can base at Cam Ranh Bay without paying as much for the privilege. Plus no one in this country my age doubts the Vietnamese have what it takes to beat the crap out of a superpower whereas the Philippine Armed Forces are a sad joke.
I also doubt if the Australian government will end its relationship with the US military but I'd rate their political reliability with respect to us as fairly low. Not as low as the NATO countries who I rate as not politically reliable in any important sense and liable to bolt if pushed to perform as expected.
Canada or Japan I think are our most reliable allies year in and year out. They are in a class by themselves. We have no better friends.
Plus the Japanese are building the best warships in the world. We, on the other hand, may be building some of the worst warships in the world. Funny old world, eh?
