Who was is it said "Quantity has a quality all of its own". You can always upgrade a hull to improve its warfighting capability but it's difficult to sneak through a complete addional hull.
WRT an earlier post, the Type 14s were second rate ASW ships; they were not designed as fishery protection vessels even though used as such for fair bit of their lives. Main armament (!) 3 x 40/60.... Reasoning was that they were the smallest (and cheapest) hull that could be produced with 174, 170 and 162 plus 2 x Mortar Mark 10 to give the complete pattern - state of the art ASW in the early 1950s - and that they would be readily mass produced in the then imagined 3rd Battle of the Atlantic which was being contemplated are occurring in the late 50s. The mass production bit was probably always a pipe dream as they were fairly complex little ships but they were fun to serve in; 2 1/2 in command and half a dozen officers. Gun armament was not seen as important for their purpose; they were always supposed to be in a Group with a Type 12 or a destroyer although they actually ended up in type based squadrons. A similar sort of logic led to the twin 4 inch/ twin 40/60 armament in a Type 15; but as they were much bigger ships, and there were plenty of spare twin 4 inch around surplus from the war, they got the slightly better deal.

3) Type 31, keep it simple and future proof it. It should be large enough to have some growth in it.
