I was reading Friedman's World Naval Weapon Systems and noticed that many warship
radars are described with a large 'below decks' weight of equipment in addition to the weight of the antenna
on the mast. I assume this is various processors, and so on (and does not include consoles etc. in CIC).
(E.g., SPS-48C: "5,684 lbs. above-decks, 24,018 lbs. below decks").
My question for any experts here is where this equipment is usually placed?
Specifically, is below-decks radar equipment for a given radar most often located immediately below the radar mast tower, in the ship's deckhouse / superstructure, or does "below decks" mean
such electronics are below the superstructure, within the actual hull, and thus far better protected? (And presumably connected by a maze of lengthy cables.)
Or does it vary?
I am curious for reasons of vulnerability to damage, protection by armor, and so on. I've tried to figure this out from cutaway
views of ships but am having difficulty doing so.
Any input would be gratefully welcomed.
