Let's assume yes....and the new JSDF Yamato is begun. What does it look like? What aircraft? Presumably US JSF will be of strong interest.

Will Japan re-enter the aircraft carrier game? |

With India building a large CV, China building up Varag and even Thailand sporting a carrier AND talk of Japan wishing to change or drop its pacifistic constitution, will Japan one day re-enter the aircraft carrier game?

Idle speculation here....
Most obvious, the JMSDF's fictitious carrier would not be nuclear powered. I would expect something akin to the RN's CVF, with an air group of VTOL's (F-35B's) and helicopters, gas turbine electric propulsion, and self-defense weapons. |

Hi,
Overall I suspect that there may still be some discomfort among some areas in Asia with Japan building too large of a vessel that might seem too offensive in nature. As such, my idle speculation might be more along the lines of first buying some STOVL aircraft obstensibly for operations at remote land airbases, and then conducting trails aboard some of their through deck vessels, but not permanently stationing them onboard at first. Eventually as time goes on I might then probably expect to see Japan build a larger through deck vessel better tailored to both Helicopter and STOVL operations, but called something along the lines of "an air capable patrol ship" which perhaps would be made available for disaster relief missions, etc to help build up good will in the region. Overall though, I'd be very surprised to see anything nuclear powered or along the lines of a CVF anytime too soon (though I could easily be way off). Regards PF |

With the advent of new aviation assets and UAV's it may well be that the new 'carrier' will be a much smaller platform than the bench USN CV.
I seriously doubt the the new generation of 'carriers' (or avaition capable ships) will be as large as carriers of the past and may be closer in concept to the DDH or other multi-mission platforms. |

IF there is ever a japanese aircraft carrier again, its crew level can only be around 1000 or lower, since Japan also needs crews for its destroyers/frigates etc. This also means only one carrier not two.
Other problem is pilots. MSDF doesn´t have jet pilots, and I don´t think ASDF will share its pilots with the navy. So in the beginning a japanese carrier would carry only helicopters, maybe V-22 but not F-35. The main threat to Japan are submarines. Thats why Japan must replace its P-3 fleet with the P-X. Together with missile defense this is expensive enough. So no to an aircraft carrier for the next ten years. |

I have my doubts that it would be called Yamato. I would expect it to be named after a mythical flying creature, or one of the famous converted carriers of the past whose names did not follow that convention.

Japan is already slowly getting back into the carrier game, check out there new DDH, similar to the British light carriers, first one was laid down in 2006. Below there are a couple of links to this new ship and there a couple of post in the carrier board. You can find many more articales on this ship with google.

Perhaps, but having lived in Japan for quite some time, the feeling is that one of the previous carrier names is more likely than the most prestigious name of all when naming new (and presumably not so large at this stage) carriers.
They are likely to reserve that for something special. One has to understand the beautiful poetic meaning of this ancient provincial name and the effect it has upon people. Sargon |
