Cameron and Salmond are getting it together on Monday to agree on the independence referendum. It seems there will be one question: in or out. And there is a high probability that the franchise will be extended to 16-year olds.
Personally, I don't want Scotland to leave the union. I have nearly an armful of Scottish blood in me and I would hate to see it not go well for them. The chances of getting into the EU without a veto from France and Spain - because they have independence problems too and don't want a precedent, plus the Hebrides and Orkneys wanting to play must surely be remote. But that aside, what would be the split of naval forces if they did depart and how would that impact the RN?
I get the impression Salmond is thinking of a couple of frigates plus Faslane. I think we have had something about this in a thread elsewhere but can't find it.
I think frigates would turn out to be totally impractical for reasons that will be completely clear to anyone on this board. Once the penny drops I would have thought it far more likely that OPVs and MCMs would be transferred. The Irish/Icelandic navies should surely be the model they should adopt. If this turns out to be the case what impact would that have on the RN (Faslane aside)?
I see it as an opportunity to refresh some of the MCM/OPV fleets with MHPC.
