It seems to come up awfully often. While on the subject is "egregious" in common use in the US? Until Captain Sparrow explained its pronunciation in "Pirates of the Caribbean" I'd never come across it but I keep coming across it on US political sites.

It's probably moreso within this group than in general, but American society does have a fascination with those who want to eradicate the unwanted, not with the eradication of the unwanted in itself. I think it comes from our experience with the Holocaust, which was focused by our large, vocal, and influential Jewish community (10 times the size of Great Britain and Canada's put together). "Egregious" does seem to be common in a lot of US writing, not so much in spoken use.
