If someone's in the market for a second hand LPH she may get sold. If we're in some crisis she might get reprieved. Otherwise its off to the scrapyard.

I'd never have bought Sir Galahad for a start, but crew perceptions often differ from the wider reality and the expectations of foreign buyers. I've looked into the allegations about Ocean's condition before and don't recall coming up with anything conclusive other than "built to Merchant standards and therefore automatically inferior". Maybe someone can tell me exactly what's supposed to be wrong with her?

There were also problems with commercial davits that couldn't handle the duty cycle of LCVP ops. OCEAN was a big learning experience as far as taking on COTS equipment was concerned. As I have heard it (I wasn't in the OCEAN project but I work with many who were) the concerns of the MOD technical teams over the ruggedness of commercial kit in some applications was overridden by non-technicals with the result that additional expense was incurred in putting right the operational issues that arose from those decisions. You'd hope that its a lesson that has been taken on board.......

Commissioned in the Brazilian navy as NDCC Garcia d'Avila (pennant number G29) May 2008, at Niteroi.

I think given the crucial role she has played several operations and exercises during her life time (including catching drug runners in the Carribbean!), then I think the answer has to be yes.

From the viewpoint of those actually living aboard and using her, I suspect that "qualified success" would be more accurate... she did the job, but could (and should) have been designed & built a lot better. Who'd have thought 30 years ago Hermes would still be in active service when Invincible was at the breakers yard?

Disposed of because she had been 'replaced' along with all the other LSLs by the Bay class, rather than because she was individually considered LIFEX. To be fair on the matter of Ocean's problems, she seemed to be slightly less reliable than Sir Galahad when we operated together, and Galahad spent about twice as much time alongside as planned during that exercise, for defect rectification. Ocean went to sea for her alloted time, but had to limp around.
