This is a general question, but I'm posting it here as this (sub) board has better traffic.
Despite being an enthusiast, I was limiting myself on pure specs. Except for a small patrol craft which spends most of her time at port, I have never learned about how combatant warships -- frigates, destroyers are being manned. Purely listed on references as compliments, I'm wondering how watches and systems are being manned. Apart from knowing that SSN/SSBNs are having two crews-- how do the officer and men work on board? Is it a continuous 6-hours watch? then followed by another 6-hours rest.. and so on... How about the weapons crew, and during general quarters condition? Are each ratings allocated a specific bunk, or do they share it with another mate? I understand that the ship's commander is 24-hours job, but similarly with a commercial ship -- they would have to rest and have the first officer do the deputized job.
Please enlighten me. Thanks.
