Fairbanks Morse to Power USCG’s Offshore Patrol CuttersPosted by Eric Haun October 12, 2016When the U.S. Coast Guard’s first new Offshore Patrol Cutters (OPC) is put to sea in 2021, it will be powered by diesel propulsion engines manufactured in Beloit, Wis., by Fairbanks Morse. The OPC will “provide a critical capability bridge” between the National Security Cutter which patrols the open ocean, and the Fast Response Cutter which serves closer to shore, according to the Coast Guard. The cutters operate independently or in task groups to conduct search and rescue, law enforcement, homeland security and defense missions. Each 360 foot-long vessel will be powered by two FM-MAN 16V 28/33D diesel engines, each rated at 9,763 bhp at 1,000 rpm – a proven engine design with a long and successful record in maritime applications, according to Fairbanks Morse. Eastern Shipbuilding Group of Panama City, Fla., has been selected to build the new vessel, with an additional eight vessels to follow. Ultimately, the Coast Guard plans to order 25 OPCs to replace its aging fleet of Medium Endurance Cutters, making this the largest vessel procurement order in the Coast Guard’s history. “We are proud to have delivered reliable engines for propulsion and shipboard power to the United States Armed Forces for more than 90 years,” said Fairbanks Morse President Marvin Riley. “We’re grateful for this newest opportunity to supply the United States Coast Guard with high quality engines for the most extreme conditions.” “Eastern Shipbuilding has earned a reputation for delivering its vessels on-time and on-budget,” Riley said, “and we are delighted to partner with them, for the first time, in support of the Coast Guard’s mission.”

ROLLS-ROYCE SHOWCASES NEW MTU 16-CYLINDER SERIES 8000 ENGINE AT EURONAVAL 201617/10/2016As of 2018, in addition to the 20-cylinder version (max. power output of 10,000 kW), which is currently available, MTU will be offering a 16-cylinder Series 8000 engine. With a power output of up to 8,000 kW at 1,150 rpm, the new engine has been designed primarily for government vessels, such as patrol boats and naval vessels, but also ferries and large yachts. As is the case with the 20-cylinder version, the new 16V 8000 engine features low overall operating costs, high power density and environmental compatibility. The common rail injection system and electronic engine control system make it possible to achieve fuel consumption levels of less than 200 g/kWh and very low exhaust emissions. The engine meets the requirements of the IMO Tier II and EPA Tier II emission regulations and, with additional modifications, will also meet other standards as required. The Series 8000 engines have been awarded Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) certification by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). “The interest in an ABS-certified MTU engine in this power range is high. This is shown by various enquiries received from our Navy customers,” Knut Müller explained. The 20-cylinder version of the Series 8000 engines are the top-selling propulsion engines in their power class for naval vessels.

Rolls-Royce wins propulsion contract for U.S. Coast Guard’s new Offshore Patrol CutterTuesday, 28 February 2017Rolls-Royce will provide an extensive range of equipment, including MTU marine generator sets, to a new fleet of U.S. Coast Guard Offshore Patrol Cutters (USCG OPC). The Rolls-Royce equipment was selected by Eastern Shipbuilding Group (ESG) Inc. for the USCG OPC fleet’s first nine vessels, with an option to add two more.Sam Cameron, Rolls-Royce, Senior Vice President, Sales & Business Development – Naval, said: “The Offshore Patrol Cutter is the U.S. Coast Guard's largest shipbuilding programme and we are extremely proud to be confirmed as a major supplier to Eastern Shipbuilding Group on a project that will transform future capability. This contract marks one of the most comprehensive Rolls-Royce systems packages ever to be selected for a coast guard vessel, and we’re looking forward to delivering and integrating our marine technology into this new and highly capable ship.” Rolls-Royce will supply the USCG OPC fleet’s controllable pitch propellers (CPP), shaft lines and Promas rudders, which offer increased propulsive efficiency and improved maneuverability. The Promas rudder combined with the water soluble polyalkylene glycol lubricant used in the CPP system delivers an efficient and environmentally friendly propulsion solution. Rolls-Royce will also supply bow thrusters, steering gear, fin stabilizers and MTU marine generator sets.Four EPA Tier 3 compliant MTU 12-cylinder Series 4000 (1000kW) generator sets will provide each vessel with electrical and loiter propulsion power. The units are Naval Vessel Rules (NVR) certified by the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS). We are fully committed to the success of the OPC programme.”The new vessels will replace the USCG’s fleet of Medium Endurance Cutters, providing a capability bridge between the National Security Cutter (NSC) fleet, which is equipped with Rolls-Royce controllable pitch propellers and bow thrusters, and the Fast Response Cutter (FRC) fleet, which operates closer to shore.The new Offshore Patrol Cutters will be built at ESG’s shipbuilding facility in Panama City, Florida. Construction will begin in 2018 with delivery of the first vessel scheduled for 2021. The US Coast Guard plans to build a total of 25 OPC ships.This contract follows the recent announcement relating to the supply of power and propulsion equipment for another major multi-vessel governmental shipbuilding programme, the US Navy’s John Lewis class. Rolls-Royce technology and equipment has been selected for this 17 ship fleet of oilers which will significantly increase the U.S. Navy’s capability to transfer fuel to its surface ships in operations around the globe.

My Trolls in the crypt, thinking outside the box, have suggested fitting two sets of the propulsion system used in the liner 'Disney Dream'.
This consists of 5 diesel generators producing a maximum of 76.8 Mw, which feed into 2 x 23 Mw electric motors driving 5-blade propellers. This is enough to propel the 103,000 ton ship at up to 24.7 knots.
A 'Double Disney' (DD) installation would have almost 100Mw of power and should stand a good chance of propelling an Iowa at between 28 to 30 knots. Does it need to go faster?
I am assuming that they don't need to use all of their diesels to power the propellers, and instead go for combinations that produce the best economy.

MTU Propulsion for High-speed FerryPosted by Eric Haun May 22, 2017 Rolls-Royce said it will supply four 20-cylinder Series 8000 engines from MTU to Australian shipyard Incat Tasmania. The engines will be installed in the new high-speed RoPax ferry to be used by the Virtu Ferries company on the Malta-Sicily service that it operates daily throughout the year.Set to be the largest high-speed catamaran operating in the Mediterranean, the vessel is 110 m in length and can accommodate 900 passengers plus crew and 167 vehicles on 490 truck lane meters. MTU, part of Rolls-Royce Power Systems, has worked together in the past with ship owner/operator Virtu Ferries who has several catamarans in service on the Mediterranean and Adriatic. “We already have three ferries with MTU propulsion,” said Francis Portelli, Managing Director at parent company Virtu Holdings Limited. “These engines are light in weight, and we’re very satisfied with them and especially with the after-sales support so MTU was naturally our choice for our new ferry.” Knut Müller, head of marine and defense business at MTU, said, “We’re delighted that Virtu Ferries has again chosen MTU, particularly since this is the first time we’re supplying Incat with our biggest engine – the Series 8000. Our past cooperation on the delivery of Series 4000 units was very successful.” More than 250 Series 8000 engines have been sold so far, and having clocked up over 1.4 million operating hours in total, have more than proven themselves in the propulsion of ferries, yachts and naval vessels. Besides the four 9,100-kW engines, MTU will also deliver four 8V 2000 M51A gensets to Virtu Ferries. The new Virtu RoPax ferry will shuttle between Malta and mainland Europe throughout the year, and the crossing from Malta to Sicily will take just 90 minutes at a speed of 38 knots. The keel-laying is planned for June 2017, while the engines are scheduled for delivery to Incat Tasmania in the second half of 2018.

At 600 kW per cylinder the new design delivers 20% more power than the B32:40, in a compact design allowing more power in the same footprint as its predecessor.The new V12 is the first variant in the new V-series, where a V16 and a V20 will follow, to address a bigger portion of the marine and land market. Typical marine applications will be larger fishing vessels, drilling units, heavy lift and construction vessels as well as medium sized cruise and passenger, cargo and tanker vessels.The V12 engine, delivering 7.2 MW, is designed for both propulsion with fixed or CP propellers or as a generator set. One hundred percent of the power can be taken out of either end of the crankshaft. For generator drive the engine runs at either 720rpm (60Hz) or 750rpm (50 Hz) and for direct propulsion at between 450 and 750rpm on propeller law. At 750rpm the fuel consumption at 100% load is 176g/kWh, and on propeller law specific consumption is 175g/kWh at 85% load.The engine is designed for invisible smoke at low load and to comply with Tier II requirements with no exhaust after treatment and Tier III with Selective Catalytic Reactor. To ensure low emission levels and optimum thermal efficiency throughout the power range, variable inlet valve timing is used to optimise both fuel economy as well as premium transient response.The engine series includes features for improved part load performance and torque at lower loads.A modularised design makes servicing the engine easier. Both the In-line and V-series are designed for up to 30,000 running hours between major overhaul when operating at average loads within a specified window, enabled by dynamic service counter. This feature is a part of the Human Machine Interface system and the Ship Intelligence offerings currently being introduced by Rolls-Royce.The resilient mounting system has been simplified, and allows variable speed generating sets for premium fuel economy and lowest possible emissions. Furthermore, this eliminates the need for welding on board during installation saving time for the ship yard and costs for customers. The pipe connections to the built on pumps have been standardized and framed as a part of the front end module enhancing operational lifetime of bellows and connectors.Thor Humerfelt, Rolls-Royce, Head of Engineering – Bergen said: “This V-engine series completes the B33:45-engine family and gives our customers freedom to select their optimum power choice in the range between 3.6 MW and up to 12 MW. This will give them an excellent opportunity to reduce life cycle costs.”The Bergen B33:45 In-Line diesel engine was introduced at SMM, Hamburg in September 2014. Available with six, eight or nine cylinders in line, close to sixty engines have been sold to date.Orders have been received from all over the world including Norway, the UK, Spain, Canada, China, Singapore and New Zealand.This engine series has been chosen by a variety of owners and yards for a range of ship designs and applications, including fishing vessels, a seabed mining vessel and two unique cargo transfer vessels, medium sized cruise vessels, and research vessels such as RSS Sir David Attenborough.The first vessel equipped with the B33:45, was the trawler “Holmøy” which successfully entered service in April 2016. The lead engine has logged more than 8,000 running hours in service.
