What is the most over-rated ship class since 1945, must have gone into production with at least 3 units started. Similarly, most underrated as well. My pics-most over rated-The KIROV's...one shot wonders, expensive and manpower hogs.Unreliable powerplant. Underrated-(no surprise from anyone who knows me) ...The Charles F. Adams Class DDG's......heavily armed, fast, dependable and resilient, greyhounds of the fleet. Packed same punch as a larger Coontz Class Destroyer Leader, sans range of Terrier versus Tartar (later SM-2 versus plain Standard).

They had sufficient space to add specific equipment for particular missions and ended up being the old reliable used for just about everything. They were fantastic strike platforms once they were updated and I always thought the marginal cost of keeping around 12 to 16 of them to operate with the CVBG's and Amphib groups would have made sense. It gives you a dedicated ASW platform as well as plenty of cells you can fill with TLAM's. Would have just made life simpler I think.

I had quite a collection of cold war-era warship fanboy books, they always referred to the Krivaks as being "innovative". Yep, ASW ships WITH NO HELO (until the last versions). I'd use "eccentric" rather than "innovative".

Manpower hogs, hideously expensive to operate, no meaningful ASW capability, and armed with nothing more than SM-1 MR- the Californias with only the Mk 13 one-armed bandit launchers. A really, really pricey way to get no more capability than an Adams, or at best a Kidd.

Posts: 9664 Apr 21 11 6:46 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	I think the Mk13 guided missile launch system is the most under-rated missile launcher in the USN. Up until the Mk41 VLS it was the best tartar class launcher. Before NTU the California class could carry 80 RIM-66B "SM-1MR Block V" The Kidd class DDG and Virginia class CGN could both only take 68 missiles to sea in the Mk26 launchers. (the forward launcher on both classes was a 24 round launcher) 20 rounds were reserved for RUR-5 ASROC, so they most likely had @50 RIM-66B/E.

Posts: 3404 Apr 21 11 10:18 PM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Sick, agree totally, the 13 was a vast improvement over the pig MK-22 original "one armed bandit" that was on the Brookes. Think it only carried like 16 missiles. And the 26 was sleek looking and newer but the fact remains the 13 carried more birds. Posts: 9664 Apr 22 11 5:41 AM Reply Quote More My Recent Posts	Fermi, I have read that a alfa class SSN had to shut down its reactor in an emergency and the result after some time was that the liquid sodium became solid sodium. The cost of getting it working again was so high that the Soviets laid it up and used it for spare parts. Ever hear anything about that?

They let a Liquid Sodium/Metal reactor cool down to the point the coolant partially solidified. After that the reactor is just radioactive junk.
