many thanks to scouse for his recent links on CIWS, this has me thinking we all like to put or 2p worth in a discussion of the RN capabilitys and its possible future procurement but can any one tell me if the first sea lord was given a pad, a pencil and a half decent budget what would the RN want in upgrades for current vessels etc. My point being there is much new and impressive equipment out there what would RN buy with no treasurey sticking its nose in.

Somthing money can't buy !
A Minister with some knowledge of what being in uniform means. A minister who knows that Soldiers Sailors and Airmen are People as well. A minister who knows that when HE sends people into harms way and they are killed or injured that HE has a moral obligation to them. Best of all not another !"£$£"!"$ Lawyer. Sorry for the rant ! |

We now have a very competent Amphibious fleet.
We will soon make a decision about acquiring the aircraft carriers necessary to provide air-cover for our amphibious fleet in these far-flung reaches. We just about have enough nuclear submarines to make naval interdiction by enemy forces a very risky proposition, though not enough for industrial survival. However, we lack Treasury commitment Naval strategy in two key areas: 1) Escorts for Carrier and Amphibious task-forces. A new generation of twelve Anti-Submarine-Warfare Frigates is needs to protect the fleet after the T23's are paid-off in 2020. A commitment to build enough of the T45 Anti-Air-Warfare Destroyers. We are have committed only to four when we need eight at a minimum. 2) In recognition of the Royal Navy's persisting global role in an era of a shrinking navy due to spiraling technology costs, we must realise that it is not tenable to send flotillas of specialist Royal Navy vessels all over the world. We must re-invent the Cruiser, a vessel large enough to provide self-protection and force-projection on its own, in isolation. A minimum of eight would be required. The above suggestion would provide 30 of the required 32 capital warships specified in the Strategic Defence Review, at a time when the Royal Navy is down to less than 26 because of Treasury enforced cost-cutting. |

I agree. It is all about the patrol and protect element from now on.
I guess the case in point is the T22's. Plenty to debate after the current crisis is resolved. They are the RN's current global cruisers. Able to carry 2 Lynx, boats and command and control. Sneaky Beaky stuff... self protection etc.. etc.. BUT crucially weren't able to adequately force protect. How could they be better? Able to carry more capable boats? More helicopters? Higher sprint speed? |

A shallower draft might help too, as the current crisis is likely to show once analysis is made of those events.

Sounds like we need a well armed "Bay" with helicopters, hanger, guns, troops and a Vosper FAC in the dock...
'ere we go again....! |

The Bays can aready do the lumping and dumping.
More of a ocean control / patrol vessel. So less vehicles and less men and no dock. Perhaps: 1. Room for 50 fully equiped RMs, or 100 at overload. 2. Hanger and support for 2 large or 3 small helicopters. So 2 Chinooks/Merlins or 3 Lynx / Apache. 4. 4 Patrol craft on Davits. No dock. 5. CIWS and 4.5inch With no need for a dock perhaps a multi hull solution, which provides a large heli deck and room for enclosed davits, is attractive. Tasked to travel to piece of Ocean and control and patrol for a designated period without resupply. |

If you're looking for a good Defence Minister, you could not do better within the Labour party than Bruce George, former chairman of the Defence select committee. I met him last week and his assessment of the state of Britain's Armed Forces was spot on, even by this boards standards!
Arrogance has its foundations in ignorance.
