I first heard of him on 'QI' when it was mentioned that he was forbidden to fly across the Atlantic
because the 'plane was not up to it, so announced that he was going to do a cross-country flight instead. He turned up in Dublin claiming a navigation
error.
I think that the re-write is a definite improvement. The idea of disguising some of the ships as American ones is very plausible, German raiders did the same
thing in @.
