Do keep in mind that mine were guesses. I've spent a fair amount of time in the engine rooms of a US cruiser, but it was built post-WWII. I'm getting old, but I'm not THAT old ;-)
There are some other possibilities. There could have been some component within it that needed to be guarded from foreign material intrusion. In that case, the grease could have been water-proofing.
