I suspect that sketch is just a starting point rather than a developed design. I have to confess a soft spot for the PA.75 design, probably I've got a character flaw or something, but for some reason it does strike me as a reasonable design for a ASW CV to succeed the Colossus/Majestic types.

Got around to viewing the plans of Foch and some odd things crop up. 1. Where is the Strength Deck, two decks below the hanger deck or have I read that wrong? Comparing with my book on Victorious does'nt give any clues there. 2. Bow catapult seems to be 55.5m in track length or is that just the trough for the catapult? If it is 55.5m thats 182ft which is startling close to HMS Victorious's, implying a 145ft stroke length, however Clem and Foch had mk5 units and they may have higher pressure/acceleration and a shorter stopping distance. 3. Hanger deck seems odd, my information from Janes says a 23ft clear height, but height under beems seems to be at best 6.8m or 22.304ft, height from hanger floor to flight deck seems to be 8.4m or 27.55ft. Question, what type of arrestor gear did Foch have? Did the French buy British mk13 units to go with the mk5 catapults? 4. something suspicious about the wires location, they might not have wire1 at 25% of waterline length, need to go back and check that though. 5. Can see the bulge added to the ship in these plans clear enough.

Posts: 3082 (28-Jul-2008 21:29:31) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	The info I have is: BS4A: catapult run - 145ft; capacity - 50,000lb@97kt; ships installed - Mod Hermes (port), Ark Royal(1960), Victorious BS5: catapult run - 147ft; capacity - 50,000lb@91kt, 33,000lb@150kt; ships installed - Clemenceau/Foch 1960, Eagle 1964, Ark Royal 1970 BS-5 is variously listed as 45m or 50m, the BS-5A on the angle of Eagle after 1967 & Ark Royal after 1970 is usually listed at 60m. Yes, the BS-4A and the BS-5 are very close, but the BS-4 was only ~32m, so they probably wanted a new design, which while very similar to the current growth version of the old design, had more growth potential. The BS-6 for CVA-01 was to be 75m.

This is news to me, but it makes sense, Eagle and Ark Royals bow catapult is too short for 151ft stroke or so it seems. While the waist is clear stated as 199ft for Eagle post modernisation. Equaly interesting to see you have different lengths for Hermes, as that confirms a plan of it circa 1966 I have. Surely the RN must have the precise figures for all those ships and the performance of them?

The launch capacity numbers came from a poster who was quoting a book whose title I hadn't copied (my mistake). I do see more sources saying 50m for the BS-5, however. Your estimation from the plans does support the 45m number, however.

Posts: 3726 (29-Jul-2008 13:21:00) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	I've read about US C11 catapults and it seems they stopped the shuttle in a short distance, apparantly a 210ft stroke had just a 225ft track length, is that true? Could be that the mk5 got more stroke length out of the same track length due to improvements in the retardation cylinder? My measurements of HMS Hermes's catapults clearly show the port one is 220ft in track length (67m), starboard seems to be 188ft (57.6m). Lengths to the maingear positioning block. Mark you thats at 1:1200 scale, so we're talking about 56mm and 48mm here. However thats scanned in from a photocopy at a larger scale, measurements from that produce these results. 220ft 187ft From Janes old drawings. HMS Eagle - difficult, seems theres a block at the end of the track run, do we count that? To maingear positioning block. Bow is 1 inche and 3 eighths which at 125ft to an inch scale suggests 171.875ft Waist is 1 inch 7 eighths, or 234.375ft. HMS Hermes from Janes 1 inch 5 eighths = 203.125ft 1 inch 3 eighths = 171.875ft Such is the variability in my figures.
