contributing in a major way to American victory and deterring guerrilla activiity."
I beg to differ.
The real points being made are these:
1.) The aircraft carrier(s), that were on the scene were unable to project power inland. These
"wonder weapons" that the anti-BB Nazi's have touted as capable of providing all weather support
deep inland in sufficient volumes to support marine operations were worthless. All they did was
provide the enemy with moral victories and hostages. This case demonstrates the fallacy of the
types of arguments made by the Anti-BB Nazi's.
2.) Guns are, by far, the most effective and least costly solution to the problem. Carriers and carrier-
based aircraft are not! E.G. The carrier battle group has HUGE manning requirements, and an even
larger appetite for money.
3.) The Navy has spent billions and billions of dollars and years of effort trying to provide NGFS with no results.
4.) The Iowa Class BB's could be re-commission at a reasonable cost, such that, they meet the near-term
requirements of the USMC, and would cost about as much as a LHA in annual operating costs.
