When PCU Gerald Ford is launch from her dry-dock, the USS Enterprise CVN 65 will be decommissioned. And construction of the CVN 79 starts. A senator name Congressman Harry Mitchell wanted CVN 79 to be named USS Arizona. See this link for more info http://mitchell.house.gov/news/view_article.asp?ID=159. Anyway it a nice idea and it better then naming another carrier to another president or any living person. However I really would think that CVN 79 should be name USS Enterprise. So how one should starts a petition to the Navy to name the 79 Enterprise?

Actually, Ford CVN-78 is planned to launch ~2012, and commission ~2015... and the last I heard, Enterprise CVN-65 is planned to decommission ~2014-15, with
CVN-79 tentatively planned for laying-down in ~2012... so Enterprise would still be in service when the name for -79 is formalized.

Enterprise is a perfectly good name for a US warship; I'll even send a note endorsing the idea to my rep and senators. I'll even include a suggestion
that a law be passed forbidding any US government property (obviously, to me, this includes all the ships of the USN) after any living person.
I don't understand why the Cult of Personality, as evidenced by naming all sorts of stuff after living politicians, has surfaced in the past couple of decades. |

You originally had to die in office to get a carrier named after you. Then CVN-68 was named after Nimitz who had recently passed. Then during the Carter
administration, the politicians decided that instead of being named after those who served the Navy/Marines they should be named in honor of them.

The naming thing is going to get worse before it gets better. In the next few years some politician is going to give a CVN a ridiculous name and finally it
will end because of public outcry, but not before.

It'd be funny if they started naming CVNs for AFB names. USS MacDill, USS Eglin, etc.
But State Names I think would be more appropriate for CVNs than for SSBNs. |

How about the USS Albert A Gore Jr.
It's planes could drop laser guided gumdrops and clusters of organic apples. No carbon footprint here, the USS Al Gore has no bathrooms, showers, or electricity. It does have the Internet tho. No need for missiles or guns on the Al Gore, if we're just nice to everyone why would they want to attack us? And if they do its obviously our fault, we should be nicer to them. Instead the USS Al Gore shoots bottles of water to refugees. No dirty oil or coal on the Al Gore. No harmful natural gas. No dangerous nuclear power that leaves a eco mess to be cleaned up aftward either. The USS Albert A Gore Jr. runs on...love.

It wasn't Carter but Nixon who started it. Remember (as some of you perhaps can) the atmosphere in FY74. With impeachment in the air, the President's men needed to butter up influential congressmen. Vinson would be a useful ally, and CVN70 had just been ordered, so it seemed a good way of defending a political bunker. No good, of course, so they ended up with - er - one Gerald R Ford.... IMO both Vinson and Ford could legitimately have got DDs/DDGs, AFTER they died. Anyway, at least the USN board reports there'll be a new USS America (LHA6). |

I'm guessing if theres gonna be another Enterprise it'll be a gator carrier.
I'm not as hard on naming ships after politicians as most. Even battleships and cruisers had a history of being named as a pay-off to politicians from/people of those city/states (see CL Houston, CA Northampton.) I guess I'm from the jaded group of "whatever it takes to get them in the water." I'd rather have a carrier named Truman (who tried to destroy the navy) then no carrier. |

Monterey earned 10 battle stars, awarded for participation in battle, while Gerald R. Ford served on the vessel. (4) Gerald R. Ford was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1948. Gerald Ford didn't seek the Presidency, but had it forced upon him, he was a man of integrity respected by both major political parties, I have no problem
naming a ship after him, and letting him see the honor in his life-time.
