Presume for the moment that Moscow gets wind of Nassers plan and tells him now (this is the concensus of what they would've said had they been asked).
No war, no invasion, no US pressure to cease the operation.
Eden is under less stress, and may continue for longer, Rab Butlers attempt to oust him fails and instead Eden retires due to ill health say in July 1957. In which case lets assume McMillan becomes PM and D.Sandys Defence Minister at that time.
There has been no run on the pound, the ecnomy is still rising.
The following is still likely to happen.
Late 1956 - early 1957 E-in-C and JTC studied implications in aircraft weight and peformance, Conclude that a 45,000ton CV could not operate aircraft much beyond 50,000lb.
Feb 1957 Controller concluded any progress (beyond NA.39 and P177) would depend uppon major innovations.
Rules out reliance on missiles.
Outline drawings of both a pure CV and missile ship/carrier were shown at a NARC meeting at Bath.
Obviously there is going to be cutbacks on defence but D.Sandys will not have the cart blanche direction to cut everything or impose something like "no
manned fighters".
Saro will be going flat out by this time on the NA47 (P177) fighter, prototype 01 will be in the jigs and building.
So does the RN still meet with the RAF and write OR.346 in 1959?
This is a mini-TSR.2 for carrier operations, mach 2.5 speed, CAP endurence of 4 hours and interception of aircraft upto 80,000ft!
All of which is way over earlier requirements.
Because of OR346 and its tenders do several things.
1. bust the weight limit of 50,000lb, some go even to 84,000lb!
2. bust the TO and L limits, driving up catapult length and arrestor pullout lengths. Even a 225 foot stroke catapult is too short and 250ft stroke is
required, angled deck length is pushed back upto the 690ft figure that was once dictated by a notional navalised Canberra and the Scimitar without blown wings.
3. bust size limitations driving up lift, hanger and deck park size.
All of which make even the 50,000ton ship marginal.
By 1961 we know that the new carrier project of the time is being dictated by the largest aircraft it will operate, namely OR346.
But the ISD is 1970-72 and the RN needs a fighter before that to replace the Seavixen.
Thus AW406, which is much more reasonable issued 1962 for ISD in 1968.
But the A1/D1 ship is questioned by the defence minister down they go towards the 53,000ton CVA-01 route.
What needs to happen is the RN to write a NA spec something close to AW406 but earlier in 1959.
NAmely the following.
Weight limit all up of 40,000lb.
Ceiling 65,000ft
Mach 2 speed.
CAP 2.5 hours.
Operation from carriers with mk4 151ft catapults and mk13 arrestor gear.
Folded dimensions of 22ft by 52ft by 17ft
Its also a point to question, what happens on the AAM front? Continue with Red Hebe or follow the aircraft industrys demands for a smaller lighter AAM. Such
designs where produced by Vickers and Fairey and they do ease the issues with carridge on aircraft.
