I bet, the state of Washington would love to get their hands on her. Is it even possible to have the Hornet museum associate to ditch the carrier and swap it for the Iowa ? I bet if they did that, they get more people and money, due to the rarity of a battleship. Is it even possible to have the Iowa sit next to the battleship Texas? I think with them together, more people would come. Would anyone support the idea of removing turret two and make a memorial for the 47 that were killed? I know I would. At last… is it even possible to save her at all?

Posts: 13 (24-Jun-2008 23:17:52) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	in responce to your questions #1, if California doesn't want Iowa it could be sent to Washington with the right legislative support #2, while the Hornet isn't the attraction that the association wanted, I don't think they are ready to ditch her, but if the Iowa was alongside, it would help both ships as a major draw. #3 not probable that Iowa would end up next to Texas, that would over-awe Texas and make her look small in comparison #4 turret #2 should be removed if Iowa is scrapped or sink-exed, a good place for the turret would be Annapolis and there are other parts of other historic ships there #5, I don't see Iowa saved in California at this time unless she goes to the Hornet people or next to U.S.S.Midway there are better hopes for her near Bremerton, wa. and less competition from other major naval warship museums

To many museums already. The more museums the lower attendance at each. I think the space next to the Texas is reserved for when the San Jacinto retires around 2020.

Posts: 14 (24-Jun-2008 23:41:03) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	one of the reasons that Iowa was moved from Rhode Island to California was so that there would be no battleship competition as a museum on the west coast, with 4 battleships on display on the east coast and one on the gulf coast, and Missouri all the way in Hawaii it looked promising, but local support has bailed out on the ship, her redeeming factor is that she IS the last battleship available, not like the retired super-carriers where you can pick and choose. still, as they said at Wake "issue is in doubt"

My state blew a big chance by not bringing Washington here. Every history buff within a thousand miles would be mostly happy with Iowa. Hopefully we can get the politicians here behind the idea.

I am sure washington state would welcome Iowa with open arms.... If peep in your state wanted her, they should start contacting their reps.... California don't want her... it sad.

Especially given NASA's (publicity!) budget, I think she'll be looked after.

You need to get the locals involved and make them really want her. I hate to see and BB's get scrapped or used in a sinkex, plenty of DD's for that. Posts: 3014 (29-Jun-2008 22:06:27) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	There was strong support in Washington to keep CV-61 Ranger there as a museum ship, and they were in the final stage of approval, with work ready to begin, when a local developer complained that "that ugly gray hulk" would "ruin the views" from the condos they were getting ready to build... and the USN pulled the plug on the deal. The last 2 years have been devoted to trying to get her placed in Portland Oregon, with all the money spent on the Washington effort having been wasted. Finding a location that will get enough visitors to maintain the museum ship economically without interfering with development is the deal-killer to watch for. The USN requires "no significant local opposition" before approving a location for a museum ship... and one developer killed the Ranger location. Hornet has (and still has) financial difficulties due to low visitor numbers... the poor location being consistently the top reason for not visiting given in surveys of both locals and visitors to the San Francisco/Oakland Bay area. Putting Iowa in Bremerton (across the sound from the major population areas, and requiring either a drive of 30-100 miles each way or paying for a ferry trip) would set up a similar "inconvenient location" negative for Iowa. If the ex-Iowa remains federal property, Congress can mandate just about anything, including that the ex-Iowa be dismantled and reassembled in Des Moines. I don't know enough about the geography of the area where the Texas is currently located. Financially? Depends on how much money it would take to provide the facilities needed to berth Iowa, and whether there would be enough of an increase in attendance to pay for the required capital improvements, ongoing maintenance (see USS Olympia for a cautionary tale), security, conservation, etc. Given that the financial condition of many of the warship museums is parlous, I would not be sanguine. I've no objection, although erecting permanent memorials to people who die in accidents does not seem to be normal practice. BB64: At last… is it even possible to save her at all? Of course it's possible; the only barrier is money. Whether there is enough people who could be convinced its worthwhile to save her (as a museum) is another question, one to which I think the answer is presently "no." I believe that a better financial case could be made on the Pacific Coast than on the Atlantic Coast or Gulf Coast, simply as there are fewer competitors.
