I like that. I guess the rest of Australia won't get to use them... |

Plus, there's like only 50 people outside the southern coastline anyway.

Yeah, but the unfriendly joke here is that they have two heads, so it's really about 100 people.

Too bad they didn't have a decent pic of the model.

That's ok Pascaly . . . Correct me if I'm wrong, but they are going to be the Hobart class destroyers are they not? By the way, almost half of all Tasmanians do have two heads - one on our necks, the other at the end of our knobs. |

Um, Launceston is not the capital of Tasmania, Hobart is. Although many would argue Campbell Town should be!

Fred, did you hear a Clarke and Doyle skit on who really runs Tasmania? If Gunns Ltd say Launceston is the capital then Launceston is the capital!! Jonathan |

I hate to point out the blindingly obvious, especially as I'm sure it must have been pointed out by others, but in 10 years time this design (if this is
the final design) is going to look extremely dated. What's the current planned ISD? Has anyone involved in the project said anything about the possibility
of the design being obsolescent before it's built and whether any thought has gone into mitigating this?
Obviously, based on these images, one can only judge on aesthetics alone, but this ship might not look so hot when she's parked next to the latest Euro-frigate with it's pallet-knife sculpted stealthy looks, or whatever eventually emerges from the DDX program. Even the latest Chinese baby-Arleigh-Burke-knock-offs look less 1980s than this.
The aim of diplomacy is to achieve results, not win arguments

Hm, Looks aren't everything. I don't think a Burke is beautiful, but it sure is a badassed ship. And if anything, the USN is still building and
ordering Burkes. This means that the Hobarts will be able to benefit from all of the potential upgrades to the electronics that the Burkes are going to recieve
throughout their lives. The Aegis design is going to be kept up to date for decades to come. Seen in this light the Aussie choise isn't so bad at all.
And here's the updated drawing, with the F-100 underneath, to show some of the (mostly minor) changes. BTW, anyone have any idea what the helicopter embarked on the Hobart will be? I just threw on a generic type.

Great pics, but the Spanish F-100 don't have a CWIS over the hangar, also the Australians will probably put that front stack extension on their exhaust as
well since without it the aft SPY arrays get messed up real quick and will have to be resurfaced more often.
Before the extension.
After the extension, taken last year.

Right now they have Seahawks, but I wouldn't be surprised if there was a NH90 NFH order sometime in the future.

Look closely and you'll see there is a front stack extension, its just a rather different shape. Also, Mihoshik's work is based on the AWD
consortium's newly commissioned scale model - on which a phalanx is mounted. Personally I doubt it'll feature on the ship itself - they haven't
bought any for the ANzacs, so why the AWD? - but the model IS the most up-to-date piece of info available.

So it does have an extension, I'm not commenting about the Phalanx, everything I've read says that the AWD will have one (or be ready to be fitted with
one), I'm talking about the F-100's they don't have a Meroka mounted over the hangar.

The AWD will have some kind of CIWS, although I'm nowhere near certain that it'll be Phalanx. From comments made elsewhere, the RAN has expressed a
preference for the 35mm Millennium CIWS, although whether or not that preference is converted into actual orders is anyone's guess (especially in light of
the availability of Phalanx from the decommissioning FFG and LPA...).
Helicopter should be an NH-90 unless something very strange happens. The stated intention of Air 9000 is to reduce the number of helicopter types in ADF service, so for MH-60 to be chosen over NH-90 would mean that the program had failed in one of it's primary objectives. |

I hate to be a tease. But I though I should let you guys know, I now work in the Fleet Headquarters Building as part of HQJOC. The Model of Hobart is displayed
in the entry foyer. to FHQ. It is an impressive sight to see.
