According to Mer et Marine (in french), the ship has sufficient food for 100.000 people and two weeks aboard, plus three helos (as scouts) and several landing craft to bring the goods to the Irawaddy Delta. They just don't get permission to cross the border.

I don't know how much use a T23 is for aid delivery, but maybe there's a Bay or something on the way...

Every little bit helps, and she would only be the spearhead of a larger force if required/allowed. Isn't Illustrious and her task group in the Indian Ocean by now? If not they wouldn't take too long to get there. More helos, more manpower.

Lots of nations, and the UN, have been ready with massive amounts of aid & lots of personnel /equipment since day 1, but the paranoid military dictatorship in Burma has refused permission for all but a trickle to enter the country.

Gee, why do I suspect that they're going to be selling it? Probably to the North Koreans.

They're actually trying to force locals to channel internal aid through the army. Checkpoints to stop vehicles entering the disaster area, for example.

One good ship can power a city and provide drinking water for the inhabitants. If I was in Burma's distress, I'd take all the FFGs the world would be willing to throw at my problem.

This means keeping foreign do-gooders out with their nosey international press. The also mistrust foreign military. The foreign military might decide to help the monks or some other group. -they want a cut of the action. They have asked for eleven billion dollars. If they get it in cash it will be banked in foreign accounts so fast the ink will hardly be dry on the cheques. -they are worried that the people will get irritated with their incompetence. They can suppress revolutions up to a point but if all the population is acting up at the same time things will get difficult and bloody. They are very corrupt and not very competent. They judge others by themselves. One T23 versus half a dozen Hainan class fast attack boats is going to be exciting but unless the Westminster is anchored one would fancy the chances of the T23. No, the generals do not want a powerful warship in their waters so they will forbid it.

Oil production is quite small nowadays. Down there with such well-known petro-states as Lithuania, Slovakia & Singapore. A fraction of what it used to be, & much less than consumption.. The old fields have mostly been exhausted, & not enough new ones have been found to replace them. Known reserves per head are about half the current depleted UK level. Could be reserves as yet undiscovered, of course. It does rather better on natural gas - just behind Bangladesh & Bolivia, worlds 35th biggest producer, & 23rd biggest exporter. But reserves are depleting fast. 2. Supported, but not to the hilt. The Chinese have appeared rather embarrassed by recent Burmese antics. Wouldn't be likely to stand for anyone trying to knock the place off , though, so I agree that Chinese support is a major no-no factor for anyone contemplating a spot of regime change by forcible means.

I was under the impression that the reduction in output was due more to deteriorated infrastructure than depleted reserves. I was unaware they were actually tapped out.
