I can hardly believe her deployment is nearly over already. Mind you she did leave on the 21 of January and came back again and left again and came back again and left again. I feel like a permanent deployed task force in the Indian ocean would be a really valuable asset for the UK to have. I brings a lot of pride to the RN and lets us exercise and be ready for action in the area where things are most likely to kick off. Its disappointing that the Govt can't see the value in such visits.

It gives a bit of insight into how the MOD is thinking long term. Particularly how the F35, Typhoon fit together. There was talk at one point of the UK buying a mix of F35bs and a's in order to provide carrier and long range strike profiles. With cash being tight, and being stuck with tranche 3, maybe the MOD wants to turn tranche 3 into the long range strike element? The compromise meaning the UK doesn't buy as many F35s.. saving money, but having a non stealthy long range strike. Either way, the Gr4's years are limited. It would be interesting to see how far a conformal Typhoon could go. The conformal tanks leave all the usual points untouched so I guess the aircraft could still have plenty of drop tanks and retain a couple of bombs.

Eurofighter was asked to deliver proposals for the 236 aircraft Tranche 3 production batch last summer, with a deadline of 14 December. Although the process usually takes 15 months, the company met the deadline, and delivered further details, as requested, on February14 and is now waiting for a response from NETMA (NATO's Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency) and the four partner nations (the UK, Germany, Italy and Spain). Rauen said at ILA yesterday that he hopes to complete negotiations on pricing before the summer break, to maintain production continuity, and avoid the cost of a gap in manufacturing. He confirmed that Britain and Italy had requested 'options', outlining the repercussions of ordering fewer aircraft in Tranche 3. He confirmed that these included a 'zero' option, and a 50% buy by these two nations. Rauen refused to talk about possible penalties, but Chief Operating Officer Brian Phillipson pointed out that the umbrella contract (for 620 aircraft across three tranches) was a contract, and that any reductions would require compensation, and some complex financial restructuring. These include an innovative design with a physical gimbal (improving azimuth and elevation coverage) to meet RAF requirements for a wider field of regard. Euroradar has already demonstrated an AESA version of Captor in the so-called CAESAR programme. Although some customers specify an Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar in their next generation fighters, Eurofighter says it has so far found that the performance of the Typhoon's mechanically scanned Captor (Captor-M) exceeds that of first generation AESA radars, and this has convinced the doubters. "The only AESA radar that will come anywhere close to holding its own against Captor is the APG-63(V)-5 being developed for USAF F-15s" according to one Selex source. Euroradar's Michael Bischoff said that Captor-M is "the best mechanically scanned radar in the world - much better than the competition" and that it has some unique capabilities that no other mechanically scanned radars have. These include an ability to 'priority track' interrupting the normal scan pattern to concentrate on a particular area of interest. "Captor is the only mechanically scanned radar that does this." Bischoff said. The Principals Anti-Air Missile System (PAAMS) launched a missile at over 3,045mph off the French coast on June 4th and hit a target simulating an aircraft travelling at 450mph and at an altitude of 10km. The new system has been developed to allow the Type 45 Destroyer to defend a fleet against anti-ship missiles. Assistant Chief of Naval Staff, Rear Admiral Bob Cooling, said of the tests: "The Royal Navy is delighted with the successful firing of PAAMS. We are looking forward to this world class capability entering service on board the Type 45 Daring Class destroyers." Dave Twitchin, Ministry of Defence director of Destroyers, added: "The first firing was a tense moment, and the culmination of much innovation and development which made the direct hit all the more exciting. "This is just the first in a series of trials to come, but it is a significant milestone along the way. All the teams that have worked closely together are rightly proud of the work they've done."
