Actually the British have access to the US Thermobaric program.

Now that's news to me, Roller. I didn't know that we were using thermobaric weapons, or that we still had any Charlie Gs in operational service.

This can be mounted in several delivery packages from glide bombs to Cruise missiles.

That gives me a couple of ideas. What might be the effect of employing several thermobaric weapons on concentrations of armour, or of hitting a bunker with both penetration warheads (such as the BROACH on the Storm Shadow) and thermobaric warheads?

Storm Shadows launched by Tornados could probably hit targets in the Kaliningrad Oblast and maybe Belarus. I don't think that they have the range to go much deeper without penetrating Soviet air space, but I'll need to look into that.
Having checked the t'internet the RAF website does not give a range and wikipedia enigmatically says 'over 250km'. Since in theory the Tornado GR.4, and the Nimrod for that matter, can be armed with pretty much any NATO air launched weapons (once the relevant computers have been taught to speak to each other), is there an alternative air launched weapon we could arm a Tornado with?

Correct, there is an unformed reserve. In this scenario you can bet your bottom dollar that every soldier who has left over the last year ore two years will be back in uniform and the three years after that will be retraining.

I can imagine that they would all be pretty keen not to miss out on 'The Big One' (apologies to Stu Slade); there will not be another opportunity like this for them to prove their military skills any time soon.

However, NZ reserves, unless they are territorial or RNZNVR do not have a training commitment that I am aware of.

In theory up to a certain age our regular reserve do, but I'm not sure strongly that's been enforces. pdf27 would probably know, being a Terrie.

I would hope the former (though there were some who tried to prevent us getting access to the source codes), rather than the later. If we'd had something to give the Americans, like an improved warhead design (we gave them VX in return for nuclear weapons info once upon a time) then it would probably be easier for them to let us in. I'm sure we could probably build thermobaric weapons ourselves, but it would probably be easier to combine our efforts with the Americans.

I was thinking in terms more of the former Air Ministry bunker thereabouts - one would imagine that such a raid was aimed at some form of high-value target, rather than 'just' a residential area.

The raid was aimed at the Air Defence Operations Centre at RAF High Wycombe; the Blackjack carrying that weapon was shot down and crashed on Foulness Island; and the Standby Air Defence Operations Centre at RAF Bentley Priory, which is just to the north of where the bomb detonated. The Blackjack carrying it jettisoned the bomb in an effort to lighten itself and buy a few more minutes so that the crew could eject safely.
The weapon hit Park Crescent purely by accident.
