There are plans to build at least 200 or more SU-27s over the next 15 to 20 years. Another sizable purchase is 30 IL-76 transport aircraft, eight IL-78 aerial refueling tankers as well as a series of jet engines for its own domestic production. Chinese could not have extended its fighter planes reach if not for Russian, my friend! ================= the lisenced production of SU/27SK has been stopped few yrs ago due to the arrival of J10, J11B. Currently the chinese air force does not need russians to offer any help for su27s. The engines on J11B are the chinese made WS10, the avionics are purely chinese designed and made. IL78 contract is now at the edge of scrap!! the russians are not capable of massive pruduce any IL 78s due to colapse of soviet union. it is now very clear that this contract will end up in dispute. Last year we all know that russians sent a team to chian to disscuss further delay and over budget. now everyone know that the russians may never make any of Il78s.

Again chinese air force build its own bomber H6H the latest version of H6 is actully a new air plane. Its engine has been upgraded to D30 (the only russian component on borad) the front nose has been resigned to accomondate better avionics . Its cockpit is similar to 737's (a two man glass cockpit). The Chinese navy can built ships by and in numbers but it surely lacks quality and true indigenous technology. This put them far behind US, Japan, Korea and India. ======== you are serously wrong. Chinese navy actually are doing very good in terms of developing its own technology. The latest 054b and 052C are typical examples of china's own defense industry. The 052C destroyers are equiped by chinese made missile and active electronic scanned radar. How many countries in the world can do that?? The chines navy has SSBN since 1980s. This yr we have more news that another newer version of SSBN has been deployed in china southern fleet. SSBN with JL2( capable of reaching US) is formidable nuclear deterent. neither indians or koreans have any nuclear subs. Finally ship building industry is not just about number but also quality. It takes india 5/8 yrs to finish one destroyer. it takes us 3yrs to make several of them bu using chinese made missile ,radar, engine and CIWS as well as sonar ( very few countries are capable of making sonar) have you heard of any other india made radar or sonar or topedos are in service? there are hunders but thousands of them are in day to day service in chinese navy!! the koreans are simplely buying us design. but china is putting its own money to development since 50s.

Currently there is no big contract between russia and china. in fact no significant contract has been signed since 2005. it is more difficult to sign any contract with russians.because the russians have very little new products!! Su35 is infact an upgrade of SU27 with latest avionics and its is not ready until 2010. Russians built very few new ships in recent yrs besides of 956E which we bought. The biggest buyer for russian weapon is india.

They are now the backbone for chinese navy. we have seen at least 12 of them are now in service. 956 E/EMs are delivered to china few yrs ago and there is no plan to copy any of them or any furthe rcontratcs. probably copies of it are being built secretly somewhere within this secretive communist nation) ============== In china commercial ship yards are in charge of all naval ship construction contract. if you want take a look at chinese naval ship. Just take a photo in shanghai's river bank. One of the leading chinese destroyer ship yards is few miles way from shanghai's city centre. there is no secret ship yards and it is impossible to build a 7000 tons destroyer in a secret place in china's coast line. The only surface ship in full production is the 054B escort. it is indeed a chinese ship.

The H-6 is a Chinese copy of the Russian Tu-16, which is a 1950s era design that has been upgraded considerably by the China. Submarines are copies of Russian. Big shipyard does not mean it can build everything but facilitaes building copy of Russian warships. TU22 is still in limited production but not for sale to chinese because it will be copied too. IL78/82 is still production in Russia & Ukraine. China is probably making copies of it too! India too is also the single largest client for Russian weapon but does not buy to make copies. India too in house is building large Destroyers and Frigates which are by far more capable and technologically superior, and not design not only to fire MRL like China. Not doubt, India's Navy may not be large as China fleet of fishing vessels, it far technologically capable and has a decent Navy respected by the world. In conclusion, in time to come Chinese will continue to produce Russian copies and claim it is theirs! Don't just compare UK and India to Chinese, whereas UK and India don't make cpoies like China!

Last Tu-22 Blinder was built in 1969, AFAIK - but I think you mean Tu-22M Backfire, a different aircraft despite the designation. Production of that ended in 1993. "Production" since then consists of upgrades.

Could the chinese ever go crazy and try modernize Kiev and Minsk along the lines of the Gorshkov? probably.

A lot of money spent on thirty year old ships which if kept in their current configuration will give you a pair of 40,000 ton helicopter carriers, not aircraft carriers. For the same money you could convert quite a number of container ships and get a lot more helos to sea with the fleet. China has no STOVL aircraft to operate from their decks, and if you want to go down the Gorshkov route and convert them for CTOL ops, well look at the problems the Russians are having. The Russians got rid of them because they were expensive to run fo very little capability and were a dead end in evolutionary terms. All in all it would be so much cheaper and quicker all round to build new ships better suited to the PLAN's needs than refit these relics. Varyag is a different proposition though, because she is already configured to operate STOBAR types (which China is buying, albeit in small numbers for now) and she is pretty much a 'blank sheet' as far as weapons, radars and engines are concerned.
