I would expect him to do that and improvise an underway replenishment of his food stores! That provides ample time for exchanging written messages.

Well having Conda and Borys in a position to report in will lighten the good Baron's mood somewhat. Five torp hits on the GF - three on one ship would
explain the British behavior. Also even if Conda's Corsairs never got a clear view on St Vincent going down the Posen - Rheinland result would hint rather
strongly that the DN losses were an even exchange. Also one more CL confirmed lost to the RN and one more still on the HSF OoB, even if only just... The score
is starting to come in and it doesn't look to bad for either side.
Necki's ghosthunt has likely removed any possibility of a second intercept and renewed action but the option to blast some eastcoast port remains, just to let the RN know who really won the nights action. Particulary since it was closer to a draw, but a second raid on the British coast would mask that unpleasant fact rather nicely. Fox should get many pics back, appart from the actual battle damage there are the charge of the FSG, the departure of the pursuit force and any rescue shots without damaged or sinking HSF ships in it. The pics with sinking HSF ships could be released as the Germans admitt those losses, provided they are not to damaging to morale. The damage shots are of great value but that value will mostly be gone in a few months as the ships return from the yards. Indeed IIRC from the Death ride the British shells worked rather well at shorter ranges, releasing some damage pics of pierced heavy armor might just confound the RN as to how good/bad their shells really are. |

Besides, how long would it take Fox's Pic's to get back to the US? Also, the Germans did release quite a few photo's within weeks of Jutland in OTL
showing damage to some of their ships and to show that the British hadn't sunk them as they were saying. The Shell point is also good. It means the RN
still hasn't the proof they need to start making the greenboys.

Jim & the Baron begin to draw in wayward lambs. Conda and Borys limp back into the fold. Jim leaves Necki and DeR untouched as he works the bigger things.
Is the notion of combat cameramen anachronistic to this period? If the Germans had even one picture of the Marlborough blazing from stem to stern, it would be far more dramatic than all the pictures of damaged German ships. I think the technology of the time would allow such a picture if done by a sufficiently skilled photographer. It would also (from the German standpoint) reinforce the story of the Battle of New York. All the Baron has to ask is "Did we get any pictures of The Dark and Stormy Night?"
As for time, if the Germans were to not interfere with Blue Fox at all, but rather put him on a train for Naples to be put on a waiting American or Italian liner, he is still three weeks from New York. One good thing - the British are clueless as to him and his whereabouts so they would not be able to mess with his return to the US.
Now all that has to happen is for Necki to disengage. A quick dash at Nott at dusk will drive him north and by reversing course at flank speed, Necki can shake him. I would expect Necki to rush Nott with FSG only and using the opportunity to get the DNs and the out-of-fuel VdT going toward the barn. Whether Necki then shells a town or Nott is just a matter of style points. |

If attacking towns is your thing then do it right. Load a platoon of marines on a GTB1913 and go sack the town. That way you do not risk any dreadnoughts for a
pin prick raid. Putting German troops on English soil will almost certainly get more attention then lobbing a few shells from offshore.

Didn't Fox show up much later after the battle? So all he will have is the orderly evacuation and cleanup of some ships stationary and holding the field
from the previous nights battle.

W D Martin-
Muscle and ligament strains are indeed tough to cope with at sea. IIRC, I sprained an ankle playing b-ball in Subic and had to deal with it on my 17K cruiser. Passage ways did not have handrails - I'd never noticed that! - and I had to figure out ways to go up and down ladders and going down was more of a challenge. Dahm has cracked ribs and is on an itty-bitty CL just now finishing a crossing. I envy him nott a bitt! ;-) |

I agree that once Letters gets the count to 2 - 2, that he'll realize he got the vigorish in the draw. However, compare it with DB and DK, as some surely will .... ;-( Also, as I noted before, all of EG was to set up the return of the liners as something that the British would be compelled to oppose with their fleet. That is, it would force a potential fleet battle before wiser Brit heads would have wanted. So, Letters believes he's left to make quickly the best lemonade he can out of the low hanging fruit, instead of taking over the orchard. |

+++++++++++++++ Besides, how long would it take Fox's Pic's to get back to the US? Also, the Germans did release quite a few photo's within weeks of Jutland in OTL showing damage to some of their ships and to show that the British hadn't sunk them as they were saying. The Shell point is also good. It means the RN still hasn't the proof they need to start making the greenboys. +++++++++++++++ These are all good insights! In fact, I use several of them in one way or another in upcoming chapters. Let me ask you one in return. How long will it take for even Fox's text stories to get back to the States? What if his editors wanted to ask him follow-up Qs before they published more than a few pieces? How long are the time constants for all of these elements? On the Greenboys, the RN continuously worked to improve shell performance during the war. Also, they put a lot of resources into even small improvements when they were identified. One good example of the latter is the mods done to the older 12" turrets to gain another dozen or so hundred yards of max range for what had already become second-line ships. Your point though - and it's one I with which I agree - is that the RN will still not have the info on just what exactly they should work the hardest on to improve. Indeed, the KM damage taken at DK would have been less if the range had been longer or any other way the engagement could have been more oblique in shell impact. However, the lower range also allowed enough KM penetration to GT more often, and the lower range also put more shells into hits higher than hull and w/l "bins". It explains why so few ships went down at DK due to flooding despite the hit counts, as it turned into bad random sequences more than anything else. |
