This chapter is dedicated to the memories of DK Brown and Humphrey Lyttelton, both giants in their respective fields.

Marshalx, I feel I must most respectfully disagree with your interpretation of TBO, though horses for courses as they say, I don't understand why a lot of
people read what they do and they don't understand my fascination with Sci-Fi and military-techno AHs.
TBO is extensively researched so it's probably the POD situation that you don't like. Any AH is going to go somewhere from the POD and some will be comfortable with the projections, some won't. In a (partial ) explanation of the story, Stuart stated that he had taken German achievements well beyond, Napkinwaffe beyond, what they could probably be reasonably expected to do or to be capable of. US technical and manufacturing development as posited was far more conservative. Thailand's situation is generally misunderstood. The background articles to TBO show why Thailand is a natural fit with the Triple Alliance. Frankly I love TBO but that is just me. Please post references to what you consider good AH and I will no doubt read and enjoy them. By the same token I curse Yuku-poo for delaying Winter Warriors though Armageddon!!! is an absolute blast ( hit tip to Jay there too! ). Jonathan

I'm not saying that you should have gone to war with the Nazis in 38 over Czechoslovakia, what really annoys me with Mr Chamberlain is that it took him until 1939 to realized what hitler was up to, when it was so completely clear to everyone else even without the benefit of hindsight that we have today. As for loosing the BoB: I have done a bit of reasearch into Sealion myself ( allthough only on the side ) and in my opinion any German landing operation on the southern British Coast would have been difficult to achieve at best even with air superiority over the Channel. IIRC the Germans never had enough landing craft to put more than two or so Divisions on the shore at any given time, but more educated people are invited to correct me.

I've made my feelings on TBO known previously. Indeed, I was banned from the forum it calls home for posting my thoughts there. If I recall correctly, it
was the use of the `r' word that was not appreciated. It is pleasing to see someone else - that being, Marshalx - has come away with a similar view,
particularly referencing here his third and fourth points. However, I disagree that it was an example of good writing. The only writing I have yet seen that
leaves me thinking that the author has a good chance of being published (in the traditional sense, since this, of course, is effectively being
self-publishing!) is that of Jan. I do not mean that to be taken as a shot at anyone else. I appreciate everyone who posts for the effort they have taken and
for putting themselves out there - even the author of TBO. Back to the original thread, another great chapter! If only you could pump one out every day!

I hope the talk goes off of TBO and back onto TLW soon but to Fred, as a simple search finds that TBO is available from Amazon.
http://www.amazon.com/Big-One-Stuart-Slade/dp/1430304952/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1209910836&sr=8-2 For an AH, that's pretty good. Though I love the reviews saying that the editting really needs to be looked at. |

Jan -
Nice piece! TLC and moi have been off doing RL stuff, including winning a costume contest at Ravencon in Richmond (we entered as an elven pair). The Tu-160 is a beautiful plane. Reminds me a lot of the B-1. One of them over-flew my son and I by about 100 feet or so near Mach while we were doing paleo stuff on a slope. I nearly added future coprolite to the strata. |

It's rather less impressive if you realize that it is self-published and for a small fee Lulu (the publisher) will advertise it on Amazon. |

Jim,
Thank you very much, really appreciated. When's the next bit of LT going to be out, btw? My congratulations to you and TLC for winning that costume contest. The 'Blackjack' is one of the most beautiful and graceful aircraft ever built (not a patch on the Vulcan and Victor though, IMNSHO ). While I've never seen a Tu-160, I have once seen a Bone at an airshow, and
my goodness was it impressive. Quite a contrast to the display that the BUFF had put on the year before.
Lads, Stu has mentioned the poor editing in TBO a while back. It seems as if his publisher published an earlier draft of the book, the version done before Chewie had worked his magic as editor. I think that TBO is very much like Marmite, you either love it, or hate it. There is not in between. That said I'd recommend to everybody to read all of the stories and the fact files, and visit the TBO wiki before making up one's mind. |

A mixture of cost issues (Polaris was supposed to be cheaper) and a worry that our QRA aircraft would not be able to scramble before Soviet IRBMs hit their
airfields.
