It looks as if Boris may have done it. What a relief! Red Ken has been around as Mayor of London for as long as I can remember. He has run London as if it
were a State within a State. He is Britain's answer to Hugo Chavez.
Labour have done badly. Good, they deserved it. I'm not so sure that the Tories deserved their victory though? It seems that the way British politics has
gone for most of the past 60 years or more and on into the foreseeable future is more of the same. Either Labour or Conservative get elected and become
entrenched in power. They capture the middle ground and the electoral system and media help them win election after election. They acquire the arrogance of
office and declare that they are now the 'natural Party of Government' and that 'they will go on and on'. After 10 or 15 years despite
whatever triuphs or failures that may have befallen them, the public suddenly have had enough and they vote for change. Labour have outlived their sell-by
date and it is time to clear the shelves and order in some new stock.

How do you think this will influence your National Elections? Just assuming the torries actually win Parliament, what kind of policies can we expect? |

How this influences national elections depends on whether Boris hideously screws up London or not. If he does, then the tories may not win- otherwise, they
almost certainly will.

What a short memory, I remember Red Ken back in the days of Thatcher, and he's always been a grandstanding go it alone type who thinks he knows best.
If Boris wins it will show just how desperate Londoners are to get rid of Ken I suspect rather than any belief Boris is going to be better. These elections are highly skewed, London, Wales and a few councils in England, its not going to be that accurate to project results on a General Election across the country as a whole. But the message does seem clear enough, Labour is being punished.....well thats elections for you. Brown is starting to look like Major, and both where the architects of their own misery, but Labour is'nt going to get rid of him, as the whole Michael Foot episode shows, they don't have that killer instinct that the Tories and the Liberals do. |

QUESTIONS were being braised tonight (Friday) about MP George Galloway's future political career after his bid for election to
the London Assembly ended in a crushing defeat.
His apparent failure to capture more than five percent of the 'pan London' Party List vote without even a particularly strong showing in what he
thought would be his East End 'heartland' raised doubts about whether he could mount a future victorious re-election campaign for Westminster in the
Poplar & Limehouse constituency.
The Galloway-led Party List vote was pushed into third place in the City & East constituency, behind Labour and Tories, with around 20,000 votes, just
above the BNP.
Mutterings among his foes on the Left List suggested his defeat meant the end to the Scot as a 'political animal.'
But Galloway's spokesman, Kevin Ovenden, told the East London Advertiser there was "no chance" he would withdraw his
candidacy for Poplar & Limehouse with a General Election due in the next two years.
"We have not seen the concentration of our vote in City & East," he admitted.
"But we have a heavy hunch the concentration of votes will be strong in Tower Hamlets and Newham.
"We fought this election well in difficult circumstances and our strategy for Poplar & Limehouse remains on course."
Ovenden went on to attack the Labour Government.
"Gordon Brown has squandered the political capital," he said.
"Millions of Labour voters will feel gutted.
"We intend to use that and build from our bastion in East London."

They could always have votes for Brian Paddick rather than a clown like Boris.Indeed. That shows that Londoners are tired of Ken's socialism. It was not just a protest vote but indicative of a desire to have a more right of centre administration.
Boris might be a comedian but he has a sound instinct for the big ideas. In terms of soundbite politics, he is a loose canon.
Also lets not forget that this was not all about London. Labour lost over 200 seats across the country and the Conservatives gained over 300. The Conservative share of the popular vote was a staggering 20% higher than Labour. I know people vote differently in General Elections, but it means that Labour look set to be defeated next time around.
