In a statement expected to be released later today, Defence Minister Joel Fitzgibbon is expected to blame the previous Howard government and current opposition
leader Brendan Nelson for the decision to reluctantly accept the Joint Strike Fighter as Australia's next combat aircraft. "The previous Howard
government left us really no room to move due to their lack of planning and strategic assesment surrounding the original decision for the Joint Strike
Fighter" Fitzgibbon told reporters at an earlier doorstep interview regarding the recent Air Combat review. During the brief interview, Karlo Kopp was
seen crying in the corner over a Powerpoint presentation of a 747 tanker armed with AMRAAMs and two internally mounted parasitic supercruising F-111s.
Minister Fitzgibbon was also quoted as saying the former Defence Minister and current opposition leader's momma was so fat, when she walked down the street, the police yelled, "Hey, you lot, break it up!" |

i still don't see how anyone believes 16 billion for 100 JSFs (ie 160 mill each) when we've just paid 150% of that for the FA18s.

The price of $6b AUD for the Super Hornets is slightly misleading. I think the answer to your question could be that the price included everything to
operate them for a decade, fuel, spares, training, consumables, everything. I'm assuming the F-35 figure is for aircraft only ie; costs to buy and
introduce but not own or operate. I could be wrong, but that's how I think it looks.

The purchase price for 48 JSF offered to Norway a couple days ago, was said to be a shade below NOK 20 billions, which is the equivalent of about USD 3.9
billions, or AUD 4.2 billions. That price does not include spares, training, etc. - only the aircraft - and is said to be some hundred million dollars less
than the price offered by SAAB for the Gripen N.
The fact that you needed to know was not known at the time that the now known need to know was known, therefore those that needed to advise and inform the Home Secretary perhaps felt the information he needed as to whether to inform the highest authority of the known information was not yet known and therefore there was no authority for the authority to be informed because the need to know was not, at that time, known or needed.

The Rhino buy includes:
-24 F/A-18F -All the spares to run those aircraft for 10 years -All the costs associated with running those aircraft for 10 years -Weapons for those aircraft -Upgrades to Amberly At a guess the $16bn estimate is -100 F-35A -The initial installment of spares |

Why would they include upgrades to Amberley in the cost of the SHornet buy? Do the damn things need longer runways?!! Somehow i doubt it.

IIRC, the upgrade was mainly to the maintenance facilities to accommodate the new type; they are transitioning from a 1960's-1990's hybrid to a 2000+
design after all. I gather there may also have been some upgrades of the squadron's ground side infrastructure (briefing rooms etc.) and some accommodation
upgrades. Clever trick IMHO, hide upgrades in the Rhino purchase price so that you don't have to double dip and ask from them later (e.g. "now you
want a better base... but we just gave you new aircraft!"). It's only a small part of the funding though.

As I understand it they don't need longer runways - USN Carriers are the same size as before, I assume. The upgrades will be those necessary to operate the better systems in the F/A-18Fs and to take the opportunity to improve the infrastructure. Jonathan |
