With the likely Ka-32/Su-33 vs E-2C/Rafale matchup, I'd say the French would have an edge.

Within those parameters I'd say you're looking at pilot quality as the determining factor.

A typical Russian CVBG would have I believe one CG and three DDGs serving as escort, if your going with just a four escort group. Since the Kirov class would
never put to sea again, your left with a Slava class as a possible escort, armed with SS-N-12 cruise missiles, with SA-N-6 and SA-N-4 SAM Launchers. The
remaining three cans will likely be at least one Soveremny class DDG (armed with SS-N-22 Sunburn) and one or two Udaloy DDGs. Kuznetsov herself is armed with
SS-N-19 Shipwreck SSMs, while the French ships are likely only to be armed with MM38/40 Exocets.
If the French carrier power can be thwarted, or nullifed by a strong CAP provided by Kuznetsov to allow the Russian surface ships to get within effective missile strike range, I think the French CVBG will have it's goose effectivley cooked. |

The Russian Northern Fleet only has one Kirov and one Slava operational. I agree that you'd probably see one of them with the Kuznetzov, but the additional
firepower provided by the missiles isn't going to be enough to penetrate the French CVBG's defences.
The Kuznetzov only has 12 fighters vs around 30 for the French, with superior French AEW. If it comes down to a fight, they're not going to be able to maintain a CAP for long, and the SAN-6 isn't going to be able to keep the remianing Rafales from picking off the ASW helicopter screen. The Russians would effectively lose their OTH reconnaissance capabilities, and are unlikely to be able to close the distance to use the SSN-22. The Russians would end up with a mauled air group while the French would be left with a slightly damaged air group. Neither side sinks any of the other sides ships. |

The Russian group soft-killed in three days, and forced to withdraw. Also the French would possibly go after the escorts early on to reduce the effectiveness
of the screen. Put an AM-39 Exocet into a Soveremny class DDG and cripple it. Udaloy DDG don't have very powerful AAW and will probably eat Exocet fairly
early.

It must be a pretty sad day for the Russians when they can't even beat a French naval force.

Why? They've never been able to do any better.

The Finland Navy gave the Russians a bloody nose in WW2.
The Germans crushed the Russians in WW1, except when the Slava did a hat trick on them for a short time. The IJN pasted Russia twice in 1905. They haven't had a real good victory since Gangut. |
