Yes, but they cost twice as much and are a lot less common in the UK. Also, the largest engine available on the Disco/RR is smaller than the smallest engine
available on the Tahoe!

Why do people in the UK pay any attention to George Monbiot?

Can't say I've ever paid any attention to him. Btw according to him we should all have been implanted with microchips by now so that the government can
keep an eye on us.

An SUV would have to be a real fuel hog to match a fully equipped V8 RR. They do have better fuel economy than just pouring petrol into sand but at the asking price for a V8 RR I'm sure one doesn't demean oneself by noting what such a mundane commodity actually costs. Just sign the slip generated after you swipe your company credit card. Monbiot would probably only be happy, for himself and the rest of us of course, if we each had the carbon foot print of a North Korean. My impression is also that he likes the sound of his own voice etc. Jonathan |

And lived in the same conditions. I like to call him George Moonbat; he's one of the few men who make Jeremy Clarkson sound normal.

Getting rid of SUVs and riding railroads are only intermediate steps. Just as "Water World" took Global Warming alarmism to its logical conclusion,
we need to look at the opposite logical conclusion - a world without fossil fuels.
We do know exactly what that is like. |

On the trains point, I have to say that when I visited London recently (I'm an Australian) I and my travelling companions were extremely impressed with the
Underground. We had similar positive sentiments towards the Paris equivalent - the Metro I think with the rubber tyres on trains? The trains were frequent,
delays were explained (we got rather use to hearing an announcer say in a monotone voice that `due to a person on the track' . . . pretty horrible really)
with alternative routes suggested.

But I guess Gore would counter that we can reduce our carbon footprint by offsetting it. For instance, do you have trees on your property? If so, you need to
take those into account. So many airlines these days are offering carbon neutral tickets. You pay extra, they guarantee your flight will be carbon neutral.
How? I can only assume they're planting trees.
Personally, I don't think individual contributions to carbon gasses are that big a deal. (In other words, I don't bother paying the carbon neutral fares.) What I would see as priorities - assuming, as I do, that producing carbon in great volumes is a problem - would include such issues as the wholesale clearing of forests in the Amazon and throughout South-East Asia (they cut everything down and then burn the waste, with fires that create so much smoke that intercontinental flights have to be rerouted!), the prospect that the massive industrial growth in China and India is taking place without the kind of environmental controls that are now commonplace in the West, and the difficulty in turning to alternative energy sources thanks to the NIMBY (Not In My Back Yard) culture, i.e. Yes, I support hydro-electric dams but don't dam that river down the road from me because it's bad for the local ecology, will spoil my recreational amenity, and on, and on. |

Jay, I thought Clarkson's spray re potatoes was excellent. I laughed with him rather than at him. "How? I can only assume they're planting trees. " And Fred, ensuring that those trees are looked after and are not merely seedlings left sitting around on hard, barren ground. On both counts the "offset" industry is at best shaky. Jonathan |
