I hope someone can make her a museum. IIRC, she, and her sister, USS Salem are the last of the CAs. Well, at least we can still get the world's best Philly Cheeze Steak submarines there.

Of course, America and Des Moines are just memories now. I also checked up on many of the ships shown that were decommissioned and whose guns were demilitarized within the last year or so. Practically all of them are now gone; either sunk or scrapped. While it may be appropriate to update the page, I want to keep it as it is so that we can see them in their final settings.

I was stationd there for most on CV-63's SLEP and the end of CV-64s. Philly, while full of very intrenched tradition, was a yard full o history. Now it is little more that a parling lot.

A bunch of auxiliaries, a few SpruCans, and most interestingly, CG47, CG48, and CG51, all with the haze gray stripped off the superstructure around the SPY-1.

But they made short work of her when it was her time. I think I told everyone that someof her associated 5/38 equipment was boxed up in contaners and sent away, God knows were. Keeps the BB reactivation rumors alive I guess. The assumption that they will be used for museum ships is more likely. GUNNER

About 2 years ago a lady wanted to know how much a twin 5"/38 mount would cost for insurance purposes. My first thought was how was she going to steal one of these and get it off a ship without someone noticing:-) Tony D provided the WWII cost which I forwarded to her. Thats when I found out she was the Historian for the Lex. She said they were going to have an Xmas dance and would I come. She said she was going to dress up as "Rosie The Riviter" a sight I counld not pass up since I go to Corpus all the time anyway and meet a girl from San Diego there. There was quite an impressive guest list even one of her old Captains, lots of pilots and crew and a good time was had by all. Anyway while at the dance "Rosie The Riviter" told me that the board of directors had approved a plan to get twin 5"/38's and all that was needed was to come up with some money, which I don't think would be a problem. But last month I went by and it was at one of those times when everyone was gone and found out nothing.
