Difficult without bases in Norway, with bases in Norway the Arkangelsk route would be closed.
Without the Luftwaffe the sailing routes would likely be much closer to Norway both summer and winter. A thrawl along the Norwegian coast could catch some intresting fish.

I agree. Britain will use the "winter" route even during the summer to save sailing time.
What is the status of Bear Island? That would be a pretty austere duty station. However you might be able to anchor a seaplane tender there during the summer months. I would not be surprised if someone anchors a seaplane tender in some remote North Cape fjord either. |

What about establishing some base in the Spitzbergen? Norway's sovereignty was not declared until the treaty in 1920. Take over some British settlements.
Send a tender, some coastal artillery (or one of the oldest pdn as floating battery), few hundred mines to deter UK attack, and a penal battalion for protection. You even have coal locally. Would be much closer to the convoys. |

What if any settlements were in Spitsbergen in 1915? What active coal mines? I have my doubts about the Germans being able to do such a thing in anyevent.

There seems to have been some small scale coal mining on Bear Island from 1915-16, if there is a safe anchorage it just might be useful but those seem to be in
short supply as most of the coast is described as steep eroding cliffs with few beaches and unprotected bays.

Do you think the British will beat Germany to Spitzbergen? That would be an interesting situation. Baron Letters would need to bring an infantry regiment from
MarineKorps Flandern to evict them.

I do think it is of signal importance for us to remember that (as pointed out) although we can clearly see the deltas the Baron hath wrought, the player in the
arena cannot. One thing I think would not be out of character: the Baron shopuld advocate minimizing the number of big industrial enemies. The US papers and
briefing on contacts with US admirals should be made available to the highest levels of the German command. Likewise, manipulation of Blue Fox is a cheap way
to wage informational warfare.
I think quick BC raids on the Tenth Cruiser line, particularly the Norway end of it would be fairly risk-free as far as bumpling into DNs. Go straight out, hit a couple or three AMCs. Take your time sinking them so they get off word that BCs are hunting AMCs. The rest if not running for port right away will be very timid about investigating smoke plumes for a while. Blockade runners can run out and Force Z has an alley to get home. the additional scatter-hell will also obscure what Force Z is doing. After whacking 2 or 3 AMCs, the BCs break contact and high-tail it straight back for Wilhemshaven. The Baron does not have the luxury of just sitting unless he has a bunch of yard queens coming out shortly. One would think maybe one of Lantz' boys might think: (Y'know...we are listening to them. Why would they not be listening to us? We break their codes. Are ours unbreakable?" A wireless-silence sortie by FSG would clarify this once and for all. |

And with Murphy's Law, the wireless silence sortie will be reported by a submarine ... Borys |
