USN should go with a nuclear destroyer and cruiser and some kind of conventional powered frigate to replace LCS as well as build the even cheaper corvette.
The cruiser would have battlemanagement and squadron HQ while operating and the firepower commesurate with it's nuclear plant instead of the watered down AAW systems of the nuclear cruisers of the 1960s which were stuck with Standard-1. Standard 6 AAW active radar missile with 200 nmi kinematic range, Standard-3 ABM and Kinetic Interceptor Missile capable of boost phase intercept as well as mid course and perhaps terminal defense as well. It would be an AICBM battlemanagement platform fitted with the very large 31 megawatt X-band ICBM tracker and discrimation rradar. Only only a few of these large vessels would be assigned to a carrier battle group, generally one per carrier with the rest assigned areas positioned for interception of ICBM with nuclear power maximizing time on station with Blue/Gold crews. The cruiser assigned to the CVBG would be able to keep up with the carrier with unlimited range.

The destroyer class would have a balance armament but lack the BMD capability of long range/high power radars of the CGN. The DDGN would be capable in all warfare areas including launching provisions for USV/UAV/UUVs and would be able to exploit the vehicles to enhance battlespace awareness for AAW/ASW/MCM/ASUW/land attack strike. An AGS would provide fire support. Needless to say it would be a large ship.

The frigate would have the economy variant of Aegies, the SPY-1F/K and be competent in ASW/AAW/ASUW/MCM/strike with stowage and management for all the roles but not specialize in any one. There would be 127mm DP guns of Italian design with rapid 35 rpm fire and a forward VLS.

The corvette would be built in it's various specialties from the keel up to encompase a basic self defense suite plus gear for one of the above missions as a master of one trade.

Problem here is cost. A focused mission corvette and a large multimission support frigate may be affordable but replacing aging early Flights I/II Burkes with the nuke destroyer that is a 'jack of all trades and master of none' raises serious cost issues with the nuc cruiser being even more expensive and having a specialized National BMD role.

Against all this, antiship homing shells fired from five inch and above guns might prove difficult to counter unless the defender exhusted his magazines to kill the incoming guided shells.

Candidate reactors with 30-35 years core life are multiple Seawolf 34 megawatt main propulsion steam output or single Ford class plants with 104.5 megawatt propulsion steam output plus up to 96 megawatts electric generating capacity. An integrated nuclear power system has been proposed so that the main steam turbines drive generators and feed an IPS assigning power to electric drive motors, sensors, weapons, ect. as needed ala the conventional DDG-1000.

The only thing that nuclear power provides is unlimited range at full speed with corresponding endurance and time on station without being dependant on fossil fuels whose supply could be disrupted by Islamic governments in unionism as in 1973 oil embago.

Still, I would remember Venezuala has Hugo Chavez and would keep the future fleet fossil fuel free by going the nuclear and if practical the biofuels that the AF is experimenting with.
